Once more without the \='s...

A few months ago, Jeff Yang asked me if he could use this list as a
source for capsule synopses in an article published in the July
Animerica. But by way of attribution, he invited readers who wanted
more information about Ranma 1/2 to email me. Since then, requests
for this list have been positively *trickling* in (6, at last count).

So, to stem this momentous ripple of mail, and to answer several Ranma
1/2 questions posted recently (What is that thing Nodoka carries? Who's
that in Ukyo's sign in the first movie? What are other characters are
there to name machines after?), I am posting an extensively updated version
of the old People, Places, and Things file.

This list began as a list of name translations to answer a query in
this newsgroup. From there, it grew to include other information
people requested or posted questions about-- descriptions for a cast
list; a list of martial arts techniques, magic, and weapons for a card
game; episode and manga chapter numbers for reference. And there's
a lot of interesting trivia, too.

There are 2 parts:
	Who's who -- the cast
	What's what -- important places, magic, and martial arts

This list is current through:
	manga volumes 1-29
	TV episodes:
	    all 18 episodes of "Ranma 1/2"
	    all 143 episodes of "Ranma 1/2 Nett^ohen"
	movies:
	    "Ch^ugoku Nekonron daikessen! Okite yaburi no gekit^o hen"
	    "Kessen T^ogenky^o!  Hanayome o torimodose!!"
	    "Ch^o-musabetsu kessen! Ranma team vs densetsu no h^o^o"
		(coming soon)
	OAV episodes 1-4 (of 6).

I haven't caught up to OAV 5-6 yet (so you won't find Natsumi and Kurumi
herein).

{Note:	Includes JIS kana and kanji codes in braces. ESC should be
 changed to "^[" when posting.}

Without further ado:

THE CURSED SPRINGS

Jusenky^o/Ch^ochuanshan  [Zh`ouqu'anxi^ang]  {^[$@<v@t6?^[(J}
    "Land of Cursed Springs"
	In the remote Pa-yen-k'a-la mountains in the Tsinghai region of
	China, lies the training ground of Jusenky^o (or Ch^ochuanshan
	as the Chinese call it). It contains over 100 springs, each
	with its own tragic legend.

	Those who fall in one of the springs become cursed: cold water
	turns them into whatever sort of creature drowned there
	centuries ago, and hot water turns them back to their normal
	selves.

The springs of Jusenky^o:

	Shonmaoniichuan  [Xi'ongm^aon`iquan]  {^[$@7'G-E.@t^[(J}
	"Drowned panda spring"
	    2000 years ago, a panda drowned in this spring.

	    Ranma kicked Genma into this spring.
		Appearance:  Episode 1.  Volume 1 part 2.

	Nyanniichuan  [Ni'angn`iquan]  {^[$@L<E.@t^[(J}
	"Drowned girl spring"
	    1500 years ago, a girl drowned in this spring.

	    As Ranma was distracted by the fact that Genma had just
	    turned into a panda, Genma threw Ranma into this spring.

	    Also, Herb of the Musk Dynasty threw a monkey into this
	    spring to make himself a bride. But as Herb was entranced
	    by his first sight of naked breasts, the monkey girl pushed
	    him into the spring, too.
		Appearance:  Episode 1.  Volume 1 part 2.

	Heituenniichuan  [H^eit'unn`iquan]  {^[$@9uFZE.@t^[(J}
	"Drowned black pig spring"
	    1200 years ago, a black pig drowned in this spring.

	    As Ry^oga searched the mountains of China for Ranma, a
	    certain irate pigtailed girl chasing a certain panda knocked
	    him off a cliff into this spring.
		Appearance:  Episode 10.  Volume 2 part 8.

	Maoniichuan  [M^aon`iquan]  {^[$@G-E.@t^[(J}
	"Drowned cat spring"
	    1800 years ago, a cat drowned in this spring.

	    Cologne took Shampoo here to train to beat Ranma, and
	    knocked Shampoo into this spring.
		Appearance:  Nett^ohen episode 3.  Volume 5 part 6.

	Nanniichuan  [N'ann`iquan]  {^[$@CKE.@t^[(J}
	"Drowned man spring"
	    Shampoo bribes Ranma to go on a date with her with a packet
	    of onsen mix that turns ordinary water into Nanniichuan
	    water, and demonstrates it by turning a dog into a boy.
	    This mix also cures Genma and Ranma, but only temporarily,
	    since it's a cheap imitation that only works once.
		Appearance:  Nett^ohen episode 12.  Volume 8 part 1.

	Japanese Nanniichuan  {^[$@OBIwCKE.@t^[(J}
	    Ry^oga finds a map to the Japanese Nanniichuan.

	    According to the map, many years ago, a village was plagued
	    by mischeivous foxes raiding and raising havoc. An high
	    priest from China tapped his staff on the ground and opened
	    a Japanese Nanniichuan. The foxes were sent into the spring
	    and were transformed into men. However, this did not
	    teach them responsibility.	Now mischeivous men raided the
	    village and raised havoc.

	    Unfortunately, the Japanese Nanniichuan is no longer in
	    operation.
		Appearance:  Nett^ohen episode 16.  Volume 8 part 9.

	Yaaz^uniichuan	[Y^azin`iquan]	{^[$@3{;RE.@t^[(J}
	"Drowned wild duckling spring"
	    1300 years ago, a wild duckling drowned in this spring.
	    Maybe it got tired of paddling and sank.

	    Mousse comes here to train after being defeated by Ranma,
	    and blindly walks into this spring. He brings back some of
	    this water and tries to splash Ranma with it.
		Appearance:  Nett^ohen episode 13.  Volume 10 part 5.

	Niuhoomanmaorenniichuan  [Ni'uh`em'anm'aor'enn`iquan]
	"Drowned bull, crane, eel, and yeti spring"  {^[$@5mDa17LS?ME.@t^[(J}
	    2500 years ago, a yeti riding a bull while carrying a crane
	    and an eel drowned in this spring.

	    Happ^osai baptised Tar^o in this spring, turning him into
	    a baby monster like a winged minotaur with a snake-headed
	    tail.
		Appearance:  Nett^ohen episode 103.  Volume 18 part 2.

	Shannanniichuan  [Sh`ann'ann`iquan]  {^[$@A1CKE.@t^[(J}
	"Drowned virtuous man spring"
	    1200 years ago, a virtuous man drowned in this spring.

	    Tar^o returns to Jusenky^o to get some of this water to
	    use on Happ^osai.
		Appearance:  Volume 23 part 1.

	Shuanshontsuniichuan  [Shu^angsh^eng'ern`iquan]  {^[$@AP@8;yE.@t^[(J}
	"Drowned twins spring"
	    Unfortunately, the Jusenky^o guide made a mistake, telling
	    Tar^o that this spring was Shannanniichuan.

	    Ranma barely prevents Tar^o from splashing Happ^osai, but
	    a drop hits a lump on Happ^osai's head, turning it into two
	    lumps.
		Appearance:  Volume 23 part 2.

	Chanyuiniichuan  [Zh^angy'un`iquan]  {^[$@>O5{E.@t^[(J}
	"Drowned giant octopus spring"
	    1600 years ago, a giant octopus drowned in this spring.
	    How can a giant octopus drown, you ask? Perhaps it used
	    up all the oxygen in the spring and asphyxiated.

	    Tar^o doused himself with water from this spring. His
	    cursed form gained tentacles and the ability to shoot ink.
		Appearance:  Volume 23 part 3.

	Fuushanniichuan  [H'e sh`ang n'i quan]  {^[$@OB>0E.@t^[(J}
	"Drowned Buddhist priest spring"
	    999 years ago, a Buddhist priest drowned in this spring.

	    Kinnii, a killer from the Guardians of Jusenky^o, fell in
	    this spring. When splashed with cold water, he changes from
	    a hulking swordsman into a scrawny priest.
		Appearance:  Nett^ohen episode 30.

	Chinwaniichuan	[Q^ing w^a n'i quan]  {^[$@@D3?E.@t^[(J}
	"Drowned frog spring"
	    1991 years ago, a frog drowned in this spring. (This
	    episode originally aired in 1991.)

	    Kaeru Sennin, the frog trainer, used water from this spring
	    to turn other people with Jusenky^o curses into frogs.
		Appearance:  Nett^ohen episode 82.

	(Warenniichuan)  [W^a r'en n'i quan]  {^[$@3??ME.@t^[(J}
	"Drowned frog-person spring"
	    A couple months ago, a man and a frog drowned in this
	    spring.

	    Kaeru Sennin, the frog trainer, says he was at Jusenky^o
	    training a frog to sit on a bamboo pole. A boy attacking a
	    panda kicked the poles out from under them. Man and frog
	    fell into the spring and came out frog-man. (This doesn't
	    fit in with the events of episode 1.)
		Appearance:  Nett^ohen episode 82.
		Name:
		    This new cursed spring is not named in the episode.
		    I looked up the appropriate kanji, but it's not
		    official. There is no official name.

Frequently asked questions about Jusenky^o:

    * Can Ranma be cured?

	Ranma and Genma were cured temporarily by water mixed with a
	Nanniichuan onsen mix.	They stood in the Tend^o koi pond and
	didn't change. Unfortunately, it was a cheap imitation that
	only works once.

	Ranma and Ry^oga also found a Japanese Nanniichuan, but it was
	inoperative.

	Since they found out that Nanniichuan will apparently cure them,
	Ranma, Ry^oga, Mousse, and Genma would all like to go back and
	find it. (It might cure Pantyhose Tar^o, too, but he's happy
	the way he is.)

    * Why didn't Ranma and Genma jump in different springs until they
      found the one where a man drowned?

	Because the story would be a lot less interesting, of course.
	Anyone with that much sense wouldn't train at Jusenky^o in the
	first place. Besides, Shampoo chased them out of China.

	Why didn't the Jusenky^o guide just tell them? They didn't
	ask.

    * If someone else fell in Nyanniichuan, would they look like the
      female Ranma?

	No. Herb, another boy who fell into the Drowned Girl Spring,
	doesn't.

	Herb turned a monkey into a girl who resembled Ranma. This
	probably says more about Ranma than about the curse. The monkey
	girl then pushed Herb in. Herb turned into a white-haired girl
	who doesn't look at all like Ranma.

    * Does Ranma's personality change when he becomes a girl?

	No. Even when he attempts to act like one, he's awfully
	transparent. None of the main characters are changed mentally
	by their curses.

	However, some springs do cause mental changes.	In the manga,
	Pantyhose Tar^o goes to Jusenky^o for water from the Drowned
	Virtuous Man Spring, which would Happ^osai virtuous. And in
	Nett^ohen, a killer who is a victim of the Drowned Buddhist
	Priest Spring changes both in form and in personality, from a
	hulking swordsman into a scrawny priest.

    * What if someone fell in a spring where more than one creature had
      drowned at the same time?

	They'd turn into a combination of all the different creatures.

	Tar^o was baptised in a spring where a yeti riding a bull
	carrying a crane and an eel drowned 2500 years ago. He turned
	into a monster like a winged minotaur with an eel-headed tail.

	An exception seems to be Chuanshontsuniichuan, the Drowned Twins
	Spring. Water from this spring doubles what it touches. This
	raises lots of unanswered questions. What happens if one twin
	is in hot water and the other in cold?	If both are in hot water
	in different places, which would disappear? Does Takahashi even
	care about the questions she raises?

    * Do cursed forms age?

	Yes. Happ^osai dipped a newborn baby in Drowned Bull, Crane,
	Eel, and Yeti Spring, turning him into a baby monster.	Years
	later he came to Japan as a full-grown monster.

    * What if Ranma fell in another cursed spring?

	The Drowned Man Spring apparently cancels out both Ranma and
	Genma's curses, so it seems like some curses are mutually
	exclusive.

	However, when Tar^o went back to Jusenky^o and doused himself
	with water from Chanyuiniichuan, his cursed form gained
	tentacles and the ability to shoot ink. Perhaps that's because
	he had a combination curse to begin with.

    * If Ranma got pregnant, what would happen if she was splashed with
      hot water?

	The world will probably never know. This isn't Cream Lemon.
	Nobody ever has sex in this series.

	Of course, any man who dared try to impregnate Ranma should be
	glad the government subsidizes health care in Japan.

    * If Ry^oga and Akane had kids, would they turn into piglets?

	Maybe.	Nett^ohen episode 45 suggests that they would, but it
	was a dream sequence.

    * If Shampoo had kids, would they turn into kittens?

	Probably not, but if she had kittens, they might have
	superfeline powers.

	The Musk Dynasty ritually threw wild animals like wolves and
	tigers into Nyannichuan to turn them into women. Their children
	gained superhuman abilities related to the wild animal the
	mother was. Also a little of the appearance, since Herb, Lime,
	and Mint all have fangs and slits for pupils.

    For an RPG, I came up with some names for other springs one might
    find at Jusenky^o.	A few possibilities for your entertainment:

FREQUENTLY USED MARTIAL ARTS TECHNIQUES

    Ranma
	Neko-ken  {^[$@G-7}^[(J}
	"cat punch"
		Genma tried to teach Ranma cat-style martial arts by
		wrapping him in fish paste cakes and throwing him in a
		pit of starving cats. All Ranma gained at the time was
		a deep fear of cats.

		But when Ranma's ailurophobia freaks him out to the
		point of no return, he loses his mind completely and
		thinks he is a cat, scratching and clawing with great
		power and ferocity.
		    Appearance:  Nett^ohen episode 2.  Volume 5 part 2.

	(Kach^u) tenshin amaguri-ken  {^[$@!J2PCf!KE7DE4E7*7}^[(J}
	"imperial broiled sweet chestnuts (in the fire) punch"
		The art of striking so fast, one can snatch chestnuts
		roasting in an open fire with one's bare hands, without
		getting burned.

		Cologne demonstrates the technique to Ranma, challenging
		him to learn it to get the fushichogan phoenix medicine
		from her, which Ranma needs to be able to stand hot
		water again.

		Ranma uses this technique to punch his opponent many
		times very rapidly.
		    Appearance:  Nett^ohen episode 4.  Volume 5 part 10.

	Hiry^u sh^oten-ha  {^[$@HtN5>:E7GK^[(J}
	"flying dragon ascension defeat"
		The hurricane punch technique of the Joketsuzoku.

		One draws the opponent into the center of a spiral,
		keeping cool while making the opponent's spirit rage
		hotter and hotter. At the center, one cool punch
		creates a temperature difference that generates a
		whirlwind.

		When a special cautery by Happ^osai made Ranma lose all
		his strength, Cologne teaches Ranma this technique to
		defend himself.
		    Appearance:  Nett^ohen episode 49.	Volume 13 part 4.

	M^oko takabisha  {^[$@LT8W9bHt<V^[(J}
	"fierce tiger domineering"
		Ranma discovers this technique to counter Ry^oga's
		shishi h^ok^odan. It is much the same, but instead of
		being fueled by depression, it is fueled by confidence.
		    Appearance:  Nett^ohen episode 124.  Volume 20 part 5.

    Ry^oga
	Bakusai-ten-ketsu  {^[$@Gz:UE@7j^[(J}
	"blasting point hole"
		A Joketsuzoku technique of making rocks explode by
		punching a hole with one finger.

		Cologne teaches Ry^oga this technique to present a
		challenge to Ranma.
		    Appearance:  Nett^ohen episode 10.	Volume 6 part 5.

	Shishi h^ok^o-dan  {^[$@;b;RRvS,CF^[(J}
	"lion roar shot"
		A technique of projecting one's fighting spirit in
		a ball of `ki', Street Fighter-style. It fuels on
		heavy, depressed feelings. The heavier the feeling,
		the bigger the blast.

		Ry^oga learns from a scroll given to him by a civil
		engineer, who uses the technique for excavation.
		    Appearance:  Nett^ohen episode 123.  Volume 20 part 1.

    Happ^osai
	Happ^o dai-ka-rin  {^[$@H,JuBg2ZNX^[(J}
	"Happ^o- big shining corolla"
		Happ^osai's secret technique, long ago written on a
		scroll and hidden because it was too powerful, which
		he later remembers and tries to reclaim before
		Genma, S^oun, and Ranma stop him.

		The technique, one of his favorites, is surprisingly
		simple: throwing fuse bombs (you know, those balls with
		fuses that go "sssss...").
		    Appearance:  Nett^ohen episode 26.	Volume 11 part 4.

    Hinako
	Happ^o goen-satsu  {^[$@H,Ju8^1_;&^[(J}
	"Happ^o- 5 yen kill"
		A technique of sucking your opponent's fighting spirit
		into yourself through a 5-yen coin (which has a hole
		in the center).

		Happ^osai taught this coin fu technique to a young and
		sickly Hinako to take out the opposition to his panty
		raids.

		This technique has many variants, one of which is the
		Happ^o gojuuen-satsu "Happ^o- 50 yen kill".  Hinako
		comes up with several other variants when Ranma takes
		away her loose change.
		    Appearance:  Volume 25 part 3.

Other techniques:

None of these techniques are important to know about. Most of them are
used in only one story.

    Saotome school
	Saotome-ry^u ^ogi  {^[$@Aa25=wN.^[(J ^[$@1|5A^[(J}
	"Saotome school secret technique"
		A technique of last resort when faced with an
		undefeatable foe, employed by Ranma against Ry^oga's
		Bakusaitenketsu.

		It is made up of three parts: run, think, attack. In
		other words, run away and think up some way to attack
		again.
		    Appearance:  Nett^ohen episode 11.	Volume 6 part 7.

	M^oko rakuchi-sei  {^[$@LT8WMnCO@*^[(J}
	"fierce tiger falling down strength"
		A secret technique of the Saotome school that Genma
		teaches a weakling Ranma after Happ^osai took away his
		strength with a special cautery.

		Place both hands on solid ground, face your opponent,
		and fawn saying `gomennasai, gomennasai, gomennasai...'
		("I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry..."), emulating the
		posture of a tiger fallen from a cliff.
		    Appearance:  Nett^ohen episode 49.	Volume 13 part 4.

		Techniques employed by Ranma against a Ry^oga made
		invincible by the Kimen-ry^u ken-in-jutsu.

		    R^o-ga sh^uhai-tai	{^[$@O52g=1GXBV^[(J}
		    "wolf fang attack from behind figure"
			Attacking from behind with hooked fingers like a

		    "fierce tiger hit figure"
			Striking from above like a tiger pinning its
			prey beneath its paw. The set-up: Ranma points
			at the floor, "Someone dropped 100 yen!"
		    Kaeru rekishi-tai  {^[$@3?m`;`BV^[(J}
		    "frog run over and killed figure"
			Mowing down and crushing like a frog beneath a
			tire.

	Gourmet de foie gras
	"Gourmet of goose liver"
		An old secret martial arts dinner technique used by La
		Petit Bouche to be able to compete with his huge-mouthed
		contemporaries. Ranma independently realizes his
		secret-- throwing food from his plate into his
		competitors' mouths.
		    Appearance:  Nett^ohen episode 87.	Volume 16 part 11.

	Maken d^okoku-ha  {^[$@Kb8$XVS-GK^[(J}
	"demon dog wailing defeat"
		A Saotome school secret technique that Genma teaches
		Ranma to deal with Ry^oga's powerful shishi
		h^ok^odan.
		    First, back out of `ki' projection range. Then,

		the aggressor, yell insults (`ba-ka a-ho ma-nuke!').
		    Appearance:  Nett^ohen episode 124.  Volume 20 part 4.

	Jigoku no yurikago  {^[$@CO9v$N$f$j$+$4^[(J}
	"cradle of hell"
		A technique Genma uses to prove his strength to Ranma,
		grabbing him and cradling him in his arms.
		    Appearance:  Nett^ohen episode 128.  Volume 21 part 3.

	Hiry^u sh^oten-ha kaitei-ban:  {^[$@HtN5>:E7GK^[(J ^[$@2~D{HG^[(J}
	Hiry^u k^orin-dan  {^[$@HtN59_NWCF^[(J}
	"hiry^u sh^otenha revised edition: flying dragon descent projectile"
		The hiry^u sh^otenha technique proves ineffective
		against Herb, who manipulates his `ki' to subvert it
		into a flying dragon descent `ki' blast. Ranma
		christens this technique the `hiry^u k^orindan'.
		    Appearance:  Volume 24 part 11.

	Yamasen-ken  {^[$@;3@i7}^[(J}
	"old as the hills punch"
		A Saotome school technique used by Kumon Ry^u.	He
		yells "Don't move" and then strikes while the opponent
		is surprised. Ry^u is searching for the Umisen-ken,
		with which the Yamasen-kan is paired.

		The basic principle of the yamasen-kan and umisen-kan
		techniques is that the body is like a house. The head
		is the attic, the chest is the entranceway, the arms are
		the gates, the back is the back door, and the legs are
		the stilts.

		    M^oko kaimon-ha  {^[$@LT8W3+LgGK^[(J}
		    "fierce tiger opening gate defeat"
