then found out it wasn't what he wanted...

Truest thing ever said. If you're not sure what you want, try taking a 
year out before college. By the time even one year has gone by, it's so 
difficult to turn back. Thankfully, I liked philosophy, but I know others 
who made that mistake. Now, doing postgrad, I really want to get out of 
college. I'm glad I only committed for one year.

In my case, after a year I *did* have the choice to make, but not because
I really wanted it.  My GPA after my first year was a low D.  And I failed
the introductory Electrical and Computer Engineering course that was
required as a part of my (old) major.

Such is life.
