First, I'd like to have some opinions on what might be a good name for
Ranma's sister, if he had one. I don't think "Ranko" would be a good name

I like Ranko as his sister's name, but since you don't...
Same here and WW knows the reason for that, heh.
*boggle*
Anyway, I'd think along one of two lines. The first would be trying to
follow the Saotome men's naming convention of having "horse" as the
trailing part of their name, and come up with a "hard" feminine name for
the lead; leaning toward organization, or something logical. The second
would be trying along the lines of Nodoka or the theoretical name of
Akane's mother, Shizuka, and find something meaning peace, or serenity.
Once you find the right combinations, ask a japanese knowledgeable
person, and ask for possible pronounciations for these meanings. They
should also be able to tell which would be a "good" name for a woman
(since they know enough japanese to help you translate the meanings).
Second, where is the Saotome home? Or would it be OK if I just made it up
myself?
It does have a specific place, but I'd make it up.
For that matter, where the hell is the Tendo home? It really
doesn't matter does it?
It's a few streets from Ryoga's home, I believe, but that doesn;t answer
th question, does it? ^_^; I guess we could ask Xavier on the Ranma ML,
since he's one of the few to see the Saotome home in the Manga.
BTW, though this doesn't really have anything to do with the fanfic, I
would appreciate any pointers to pictures of Nodoka or pictures of
Ranma-chan wielding a sword on the Net.
Um... Ranma-chan with a sword... Saw that once on the Ta'avern 1/2
homepage once. Dunno about Nodoka.
There is a manga picture (don't remember where) which has Ranma
holding a sword. I don't know why, but it's there.
The Three-Wish Nihontou story. Ranma went on a date with Kunou to get
the sword from him, while Panda was trying to do the same (to get the
sword, you perverts! B-).
