Big bad computer problems:
Our glorious server at this illustious institution of academia has
been doing a highly accurate imitation of a demon wench with pms. It
crashed again yesterday (it's back up now, but no one knows for how
long). Also, everyone's Mail.Mai files (it's a wierd file-thing that
keeps track of where the mail messages are and it tells the mail and pine
programs where to find them - at least, that's how the lab monitor
explained it to me) have been expanding to huge proportions for no
apparent reason. What this does is eat up most of our quota, usually
overdrawing us. When this happens, we cannot send mail.
And yet another fun occurance: I have seen with my own eyes two people
with phantom files (well, _something_ invisible was eating up all their
room). In one case, he only had about 1000 blocks used, and
the computer told him he had about 1700 used. The other guy had exactly
two files total in his account, which added up to less than 100 blocks
used. The computer told him he had well over 800 used.
The big head honcho supervisor guy is supposed to be coming in, but I
don't know when, and it's not guaranteed that he'll know what's wrong.
If any of you computer-type people out there have any ideas, clues,
hints, or exorcism rites, please let me know.
I know this is probably a long shot, but I thought I'd try anyway.
Thanks.
