Even *I* wrote a fanfic in first person narration (A Guided Tour).  That 
doesn't mean I identified with the narrating character (at least not more 
than with *every* character I write).  I definitely identified with the 
Jusenkyou Guide in that story.  Didn't write him to be me, either, though.
