As opposed to the Manga, I was told that in the first episode Ataru was 
hit in the head by a baseball before meeting Lum and the 1st tag race, 
where in the manga it was the second issue, after the tag race but 
before Lum comes to live permently with Ataru. 

 
 
i don't know about the manga, but in the anime, the baseball incident did
come first.
