I've tried downloading the fanfics at the ftp archive, but every time I do

any file I request don't exist. Does anyone on the ML know how to do
something about this?

Yah.
Get yourself a copy of Gzip - available at many sites on the web (just do a
search on Yahoo, and you'll find loads of sources...)
Then FTP from the archives being careful to MAKE SURE YOU SET IT FOR BINARY
DOWNLOAD.
(sorry to shout, but is important.)
The UNIX G.zip algorythm produces an archive that uses only ascii
characters, but if transferred in text mode, it is corrupted, and will not
be useable.
Fetch and other FTP clients will default to an ASCII or TEXT mode download
on a .GZ file, unless the user specifies otherwise, so force binary and you
should be OK.

(BTW, G.zip utilities are available for all major platforms, including Mac,
PC DOS, Windoze et al. Most are freeware.)
