“It is getting late,” Nodoka interrupted, “we have a room prepared for
you. You should get some sleep, it’s been a long day and will probably
be longer tomorrow.”
Ranma sighed and followed them to his room.
===
Ranma stood outside Utcchan’s, pacing back and forth. “Where are they?
We agreed to meet here first thing in the morning.” Ranma muttered to
himself. “They probably won’t let her out of the house. Nabiki might
just lock Akane in her room, if she knew we were going to see each
other.” He then looked up and noticed Akane. His heart skipped a beat
as he saw here. She smiled when he looked at her. “Kawaii,” he thought
as his tense body started to relax.
“He looks so nervous,” Akane thought, “is he worried about me, or Ukyo?”
Akane stood and watched Ranma as he walked in circles a few times before
he noticed her. “Ranma,” she thought, when he looked up at her.
Ranma walked up to Akane and looked into her eyes. He held out his hand,
and she took it into hers. “Do you think Ryoga and Akari will make it?”
asked Ranma.
“With Akari at his side, I’m sure of it.” Akane responded.
Just then Akari and Ryoga appeared. Akari tightly holding onto Ryoga’s
arm.
“Ready?” asked Ryoga.
“Hai.” replied Akane and Ranma together.
As the two couples entered, they saw that Ukyo was busy preparing some
okonomiyakis. Konatsu was by her side, watching intently. Ukyo flipped
the four okonomiyakis onto some plates, which Konatsu picked up.
“Ran-chan!” Ukyo shouted as she jumped over the griddle and straight at
Ranma. She hugged him with all her might. “I’ve missed you so much,
Ran-chan. I knew you were coming back, but it was so hard waiting for
you.!”
“Uc-chan,” Ranma gasped as he tried to break free from the ferocious hug,
“I can’t breath.”
“Oh, sorry. I’m glad you’re back, too, Akane.” Ukyo said as she gave
Akane a quick hug. “I made some okonomiyakis for breakfast for all four
of you in celebration of Ryoga’s success!”
Konatsu had set the plates at a side booth were Ukyo directed the
foursome to set. Konatsu looked at Ranma and Akane, especially Ranma,
with eyes of distrust. “Why did he have to return? Things were going
o.k. between Ukyo and me, and now he’s going to mess everything up.”
“Kon-chan! Get over here!” Ukyo shouted.
“Kon-chan?” Konatsu thought, “why is she calling me that?”
“Kon-chan?” Ranma thought, “when did she start calling him that?”
Akane, Ryoga and Akari thought the same thing.
“Guys,” Ukyo began, “after Ryoga left, I did a lot of thinking and I have
to get something off my chest.”
Before anyone could react, Ukyo wound up and ...
** SLAP!! **
“RANMA! YOU INSENSITIVE, SELFISH JERK! I thought we were FRIENDS! You
come in here, use me and my feelings to get free food and then walk out,
saying ‘Good-bye, Ucchan.’ You didn’t think of your family, your friends
or even me. Just your ‘honor’ and how the only answer was to kill
yourself. You hurt a lot of people, including me. I don’t want to hear
any excuses from you. I just want to tell you that I don’t want to be
your iinazuke anymore.”
Everyone was silent, staring at Ukyo.
“Ranma,” Ukyo began softly, “I still want to be friends with you, it’s
just that I don’t think I can trust you right now. Akane, I am VERY
happy that you’re back. I’m just upset with Ranma, not you or Ryoga or
Akari.”
“We can still be friends?” asked Ranma.
“Yes, Ranma. I just don’t want to be engaged to you. Besides,” Ukyo
looked at Konatsu, “someone was there for me and I didn’t realize it at
the time. I’m not going to ignore him, like you did me. Kon-chan, we
need to talk.” Ukyo led Konatsu by the hand to a booth on the other side
of the room.
“At least she doesn’t hate me.” Ranma sighed.
“I think that went pretty well, all things considered.” Ryoga said
brightly.
Akane and Ranma looked at Ryoga. He was staring at Akari. Ranma leaned
over and whispered to Akane. “What’s with him? He was never this
happy.”
Akane whispered back, “He’s in love, baka! You sure can miss the obvious
at times.”
Akari and Ryoga were just staring at each other and holding hands across
the table. “Do you think we could be as happy as they are?” Ranma asked
quietly.
Akane looked at Ranma, grabbed his hands and nodded. “With all my heart,
yes.”

In Part Six -
The nurse watched the two go into the room. “What nice girls.”
