Whoa! I subscribe to the FFML for a few days and I get a LOT of 'fics!
It's nice to know that there are a lot of writers out there. Well, anyway,
I've been skimming through several of the 'fics. (But there are a lot
I have to read) Some of the 'fics reviewed here are pieces of a larger
story... parts of which I admit I haven't read, but have tried to draw
inferences to answer my questions from context.(however, I think I have
failed miserably in "Worse") Anyway, I can't promise I'll read all the 'fics
sent
to me, but I'll try my best.
COMMENTARY: By Marc P. Reyes.
This is the scale I use for rating fanfiction I have read.
Note that these are MY opinions!
"Sagwa" = Terrible writing, I don't know if it can be redeemed.
"Mahina" = Poor writing, needs a lot of work.
"Pwede na" = So-so writing, needs work.
"Okey" = Writes well, needs a little work.
"Magaling" = Good story. I liked it.
"Astig." = Very good story. Superior writing.
"HATAW!" = "Waaaa! why did you write this story!?! I missed my
Chemistry test because of it!!!"
"An Alternate History of Ranma 1/2" by Ichinohei Hitomi
Well, when I read this, one word struck me.
Depth.
The story follows the manga closely at first, confusing
me as to what was different from the series. But even
then it was a pleasant account, with additional insights
and detail that is not in the manga/anime (or was lost
in the translation). However, I quickly got to the part
where it diverged greatly, and I must admire the way this
author handles it.
I especially enjoyed the elements of Japanese culture that
was inserted in the story. This is one fanfic where I not
only enjoyed reading it, but learned something new too.
This story seems to rationalize keeping Ranma as a girl. Although
the arguements are sound, I believe that Ranma could remain a
boy, if he REALLY wanted to.
My rating: "Astig."
"Wasurenaide" by Douglas A. Reeves
This short 'fic is an epilogue to a much longer fanfic wherein
the Knight Sabers apparently die.
I must admit, I haven't read that 'fic, which probably answers
the questions of how they died and why. But when reading this
story, I took everything in context to what was being said. The
atmosphere of regret and sadness was effectively projected, and
the ghost of Nene appearing before Stormwalker was, well,
touching. However, I seemed to have missed out on much of the
emotional content that was supposed to be there. Perhaps because
I did not read the main body of fiction. Oh well, another 'fic to
go hunting for...
My rating: "Magaling."
"Ranma and Me: Part 2-Furinkan" by Uncle Fester.
Nice concept. A relative of Ranma in Furinkan High. The
first person point of view is refreshing, and the dialoge
is casual and witty. Problems. (sigh) First, I think
this author used `martial arts <insert club name here>' too often.
It may be part of the style, but I think it's a _little_ bit
overdone. The first part is a bit draging, too, but then it's hard
to write those `stream of consciousness first person' things without
being draging. The taped interview is a nice touch, but aside from
the humerous sexual innuendos, I couldn't see how it fits with
the rest of Ito's account. (or where it's headed.)
My Rating: "Pwede na"
Chapter 6 "Revelation" of an untitled work by Michael Chen.
Yup. Definately an OOC. The Nabiki I see in this work is
almost different from the traditional IC Nabiki. Well, she
still schemes, but has no qualms about showing her kind and
gentle side. Akane, in this story, is more insensitive then
usual... so I wouldn't blame Ranma for falling in love with
Nabiki more then Akane, who, in this story, I believe is
a more mature person then the younger sister. (the reason for
this being her courage to confess what she did.) As to answering
the author's questions about sequencing, I'm afraid I can't...
I have to read the first five chapters first. As to being OOC,
well, this story has me confused. It seems to me that everyone is IC
except Akane, Ranma and Nabiki.
My Rating: "Magaling"
"Worse," Chapter 6, by Scott K. Jamison
Another fanfic series that I should read the first five episodes of.
Where is Ranma anyway, an alternate universe? Nice idea, Ranma being
a sister of someone, engaged to Ryoga, etc. etc. But is he/she aware
of who he/she really is? A bit confusing there. Perhaps the answer's
in one of the first five 'fics. Anyway, it's an engaging story. I
don't think I can review it correctly without looking at the first
five parts... because the story is so very much different from the
traditional Ranma 1/2 series.
My Rating: Can't really give one until I read the previous 5.
"Future Ranma: Memories" by Ben L. Harrison
This work is a pleasant read. The language is nice and simple and there
is a smooth, flowing style as the author moves from scene to scene.
This author provides good logical explainations for what happened to
the Ranma characters in the years ahead. Some change is understandable,
but I read this to be an IC story and well, I think Nabiki and Shampoo
changed a little bit _too_ much from the original. I would think Nabiki
would be more selfish, and Shampoo a bit more obsessed with Ranma.
I believe Shampoo really liked Ranma and was not forced into it by her
great-grandmother. A better introduction of Stewart would be nice,
rather then "Nabiki's American Friend". But all in all, it's a good
read. My rating: "Okey."
Well, that's all for this week. Thanks for reading!
