I love throwing my two cents in.
I don't think you can distinguish between prose and script as
one is better than the other. Like the debate between Apple and IBM
there is merit to both sides. I love IBM compatible, but I easily tell
people who have no computing experience to buy an apple, it is just a
matter of what fits the circumstances.
The same is true for prose and script. Now I'm not saying that
one is easier than the other, it isn't, but I would suggest one over the
other for a writer. I don't write in script for the simple reason that I
can't. My mind does not think of stories in that way. I deal with deep
emotional development in my characters. I want them to be real. i want
the reader to reach out and touch my characters. I take the Ranma
characters and change them for my purposes. If you have read any of my
fanfic's you'll realize that I like OOC a lot.
Personally I consider script limited in its character
development capability. It is hard to develop characters with digging
into their thoughts and their reactions to a situation. I'm sorry,
script is mainly dialogue and characters don't start blurting out
everything they are thinking. Ranma will not suddenly blurt out after a
fight with Akane, "You know I really feel bad about the way i just
acted. I hurt her and she didn't deserve it."
I prefer doing this.
Ranma stormed from the dojo, his face drawn up into a scowl. Why
did she have to be so unreasonable? Why can't she just let me explain
something instead of jumping to conclusions? It's not like I enjoy the
way my life is. Then why don't you stop it?
The question struck him like a bolt of lightning. Could it be
that all of their fights were his fault? Is she hurt by my actions? Is
that why she yells at me, why we fight? No it can't be. She is just
violent. As he walked away though, the seeds of doubt planted in his
mind, took root and began to grow. It might be his fault.
That kind of rationalization is not possible in a script format.
Really script works well for comedy and slapstick. You can put emotional
development in it, look at DnR, but generally it is simply a story.
Ranma gets lead on cure and goes after with all of his zany friends.
Maybe that is one reason I refuse to write in script, because I
can't do comedy, or maybe it is simply the fact that I write for the joy
of writing and love to see long and complicated rivers of the english
language form a coherent idea.
Some people will state that script is the more difficult of the
two. I might agree simply at a begineers level. But any amateur can
throw a good story in script format. Just like any begineer can make a
good story in prose. The difference lies in those who are seasoned
writers. I find prose more versatile, and script too limiting for my
style.
Style that is what this all comes down to. What is your style? I
don't think anyone really cares whether they are reading a script of
prose. Maybe prose is more common, but I find more people who write bad
prose than bad script. You write what you can write best. I will not
post a piece of crap written inscript just because someone wants a
script story from me. Just as I would never post a bad prose, but 'm
confident none of my prose fanfics are crap -sorry 'bout the ego. Read
them and disagree with me if you want-
To write is easy, to write well is difficult, to write and
inspire people is a gift. These words are very true. Just live by them
and it doesn't matter if you write script or prose. Personally I'd like
to see someone do fanfic poetry. Now that takes skill.
Any fool can write, it is up to you to determine whether you
write best in a script or prose. Neither is better. Both have their
strong points, both their weak. And that is all I will say on that
subject. This is my spam limit for the month.
