HUNTER AND PREY
Ch 2 Puzzle

Hiei looked up sharply. He stood up from the tree branch and opened his
Jagan. Instead of finding what he was looking for, he felt a sharp stab of
pain.

"Shit!" He cursed. "What was that?!"

Hiei disappeared from the tree branch as he went in search of the
mysterious power source. It had been an S-class power surge all right, but
that was not what had intrigued him. It had been the familiar feeling that
was tugging at Hiei. He 'knew' that someone had just used his power from a
third eye and he was determined to find out who this person was.

Sonoma panted and gasped. His hunter was nowhere to be seen but Sonoma
knew that he would be back. He walked toward Kurama, who was struggling to
stand.

"I told you to go back into the house," Sonoma said as he helped Kurama up.

"Curiosity, Sonoma," Kurama smiled weakly. "thank you."

"No, I should thank YOU instead. If you hadn't lashed out and distract
him, I might not have been able to retaliate."

"It's all right now, Sonoma. I think I can stand on my own," Kurama said.
He then looked at Sonoma with some concern. "Are you sure you are all right?"

"Yes, I'm quite well," Sonoma replied. He then turned around and headed
back into the woods. Sonoma swayed a little as he walked.

"Sonoma, your youki is decreasing drastically. You should get some rest
and..."

"NO!" Sonoma said with vehemence. "I mean... no thank you. Really, I am
fine."

*He is hiding something. He is looking for help...* Kurama realized.

"Sonoma, wait!" Kurama called and ran toward the youth. He arrived by
Sonoma's side just in time to catch the youth as he passed out.

Kurama shook his head and carried Sonoma back into his house.

"So you mean this guy's got S-class power?" Yusuke asked.

"Yes, didn't you feel it? The earth was trembling..." Kurama said.

"Man, you seemed really shaken by this," Yusuke said. "are you okay?"

"I'm fine. I got a few scratches here and there, but I'm fine."

Yusuke looked at Sonoma and then remarked, "this guy really doesn't LOOK
like a youkai. I mean, look at him right now! You can't even feel ANY
youki coming from him...I doubt even a superior S-class youkai can do that
when he's unconcious. I know I couldn't."

"Yusuke..." Kurama started. "I think there is something VERY strange about
Sonoma. I don't know what it is right now..."

"Can't you ask him? Aren't you good at that?"

Kurama sighed. "I can't Yusuke. He...he seemed to have a way of avoiding
questions and getting away with it."

Yusuke was unable to repress a smile as he answered, "So our youko has met
a rival huh? It used to be you who do this to us all the time."

Kurama smiled back in return and nodded his head. "I'll try again when he
wakes up. There is something that I have to get out of him."

"Kurama," Yusuke asked. "what happened in the woods? Who was the attacker?
What class youkai is he?"

"I wish I know, Yusuke. I really wish I know."

*****************

"Hiei, I need some information from you," Kurama said.

	"What?"

"Do you know any other kind of youkai who has a third eye?"

"Hn!" Hiei snorted. "Makai's big, so what do you expect idiot?!"

Kurama sighed and sat down. "Sonoma has a third eye, Hiei..."

"I KNOW that already," Hiei snapped. "I felt it dammit!"

"Why are you so irritated?" Kurama asked suddenly. "You know that something
was wrong, didn't you?"

Hiei didn't reply. He just kept his eyes focused on something distant.

"There is Jagan and there are youkais who are born with the third eye. But
Sonoma's doesn't look like he was born with it, but it doesn't look like a
Jagan either."

	"What do you mean?"

"Well just look dammit!" Hiei said impatiently. "It doesn't show up on his
forehead now. But I can tell that it's there."

Kurama sighed again. "This is getting nowhere Hiei..."

"What did you say his name is again?" Hiei asked suddenly.

	"What? Oh it's Sonoma."

	"So...no...ma..." Hiei repeated slowly. "Sonoma..."

	"What's wrong?"

	"Nothing," Hiei replied.

Kurama was about to say something more when the phone rang. He got up and
left the room to retrieve the phone.

"Moshi, moshi..." Hiei could hear Kurama's voice down the hall. From the
way Kurama was talking, he was sure that Kurama must be talking to his human
mother. Hiei then took this chance to examine Sonoma closer. He opened his
Jagan and peered inside. The Jagan didn't stay open for a long time, for
Hiei was forced to close it as soon as he saw the memories of the youth.

*Masaka...This is impossible!* Hiei realized. *It's him!*
