Can everybody just keep their C&C to the authours themselves and not
send it to the mailing list

Uh... no.

Public C&C is in fact the fanfiction mailing list's main reason for existence.
The ability to have many readers discuss a story back and forth with the author
is the whole point of having a mailing list, rather than a passive medium like
rec.arts.anime.creative . Not that I'm saying that all C&C should be public.
This is a matter to be judged by the C&C'er. I am saying that *some* C&C can and
should be public, since other readers will want to get in on the discussion.
It's why we're here.

? I have to delete about 60% of the mail
because of that. of couse I skim through it first but it's more
courtious that way.

Reducing the volume of the FFML is a worthy goal, IMO, but (to use an analogy)
cutting off one's legs is not an advisable way to lose weight. Let's get rid of
some of the more pointless kinds of posts:

1) TEST MESSAGES: If you aren't getting any mail, E-mail someone else on the
list and ask if they are getting any. (Mail, I mean.) If they aren't, it's a
good sign that the list is down.

2) REQUESTS FOR FICS: E-mail these to the author and give him/her time to
respond. If you don't know the author's address, E-mail a C&C'er for the address
or the fic. For older fics, check the RAAC archives, or AlberCrombie's FFML
archives.

3) REQUESTS FOR ALL POSTS SINCE A CERTAIN DATE: Get these through the archive
remailer.

This would be a much, much more sensible way to reduce the list's volume.
