Actually, you might want to start on Dragons of Autumn Twighlight.  It
gives a pretty good introduction to Raistlin.  I've been thinking about
this for a while, that if the Dragonlance books became a movie, it should
be an anime.  Do you agree?

Correct me if i am wrong but you are thinking about Legends.  Chronicles 
starts out with Dragons of Autumn Twilight.  Both books are trilogies.
