It shows a side of Ranma I don't think exists, and which fundamentally
disturbs me when I see it portrayed so.

If you don't believe this side exists, why are you letting this get to you?

I think I know why you're disturbed. In Ranma, Akane and Ukyou, you see
yourself. I know; that's what I saw. From Ranma, victimization. From Akane,
the beast within. From Ukyou, tragic friendship. Their usual natures had
been stripped away, leaving the symbols they represent visible for all to
see. So in a way, you're right; they're not really Ranma, Akane and Ukyou,
but aspects of real life and human nature that we prefer didn't exist.

I think you're making a bit too much out of what I'd basically figured as
latent homophobia combined with a desire for escapism. }:-{D
