Saw 5th Element a few nights ago - not a bad movie. My friend
and I got to talking, and we came to the conclusion that, in many ways,
it comes off as a kind of live-action anime; at least, it's got a very
'anime' feel to it.
Anybody else agree? Look it over (minor spoilers):
-The so-called 'ultimate being': very cutsey young woman, yet
awesomly powerful and a (so we are to believe) kick-ass martial artist to
boot. Despite that, she need protecting my the hero.
-The setting: the whole middle-part of the movie, where the
action lags, seems more interested in just leisurely showing off this
nifty sci-fi world they've created. Nice attention to detail.
-The director (or art/set/whatever director) obviously knows
something about anime - why else leave a copy of Sanctuary lying around?
-The ending: just so typical of an anime plot. Especially once
you figure out what the '5th element' is. Can we say... Orgun?
Well, just a few idle thought. I just no when I saw that big
space cruiser in the opening future shot, I was thinking: why the hell
don't they make a big-budget, live-action Macross/Robotech movie. Too
big? Nah... just cover the story from the beginning, to the fold, to the
trip back to earth from Pluto. Leave the war for the inevitable sequel...
Later!
