Yes, it was an assualt on the moon, and the other planets (inner) were
ravaged too. The outer senshi were supposed to only defend the solar
system from invaders from OUTSIDE the solar system, and they were also
forbidden to talk to each other or the other senshi and had to stay on
their planetary castles. (I can get the names of the castles if you need
them)

BTW, just a question - is all this coming from the manga? As I recall,
these things were never put into this much detail in the anime, which
focused almost exclusively on the modern storyline. I'm interested in
finding as many sources as possible, and wondering if this was from a
manga storyline I haven't heard much about, or a completely different
source...

Actually, hom much of the first moon kingdom was ever shown in the manga or
the anime? Was anything ever really defined, or was it left kind of
nebulous? And what differences are there between the manga and the anime in
this respect?

Just so you know, the manga and anime of Sailor Moon are, for many
purposes, two completely separate stories. They share many of the same
characters and overarcing storylines, but a heck of a lot of details were
changed. The manga went into more detail on some things, while the anime
went into more on others (for instance, there were many characters who
were barely one-shots in the manga, but who were recurring enemies over a
season of the anime. Some treatments were just different - the Generals,
for instance, were mostly fairly short-term opponents with few
interactions among themselves in the manga, while they were focused on
more in the anime - giving such details as Nephrite's rivalry with
Zoicite, his romance with Naru, Zoicite and Kunzite's love, and so forth.
On the other hand, the manga Generals continue to play a role after they
died - they regained their loyalty to Endymion, and gained the ability to
manifest to him as ghostly advisors. Most fanfic authors take most of
their story elements from the anime, adding little dashes of manga as they
feel appropriate.

As far as the Silver Millennium goes, the most we saw of it in the anime,
at least, was a few shots of Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion at the
palace, romancing each other (and an implication that due to the situation
on Earth, he wouldn't be welcome there), a masquerade ball on the eve of
Beryl's attack, and views of the Dark Kingdom's army overrunning the
palace. Not too much to go on, but it leaves things open for those with a
good imaginatin.
