Newbies and people who dislike long headings aside (those being VERY valid
reasons), there is a very cheesy reason why some writers don't tag their fics.

They want everyone to read the fic.

Most veterans of the list have developed a killfile reflex concerning some
types of posts. For example, Takezo in Gratuitous Self deletes any post with
the first sign of 'heretic' on it.

I have some friends who delete anything with [LEMON] or [YAOI] on the spot.

Now, of course every fanfic writer wants his/her posted story to be read.
Being aware of the said reflex, they attempt to bypass it by not tagging
their story.

Unfortunately, I see no way to prevent this from happening.

Just my two cents.
