What does this mean? Not a whole lot, really. You will
continue to post as you normally would, and messages will
be sent to the list without needing to be approved. But now,
you will be both expected and required to adhere to the rules
regarding spam.
Okay, no problem but have you come up with a workable definition Spam?
In short, according to the NWO, What IS Spam?
What is spam? Tough question. Let's first deal with what
_isn't_.
<snip the obvious>
* Fic ideas. As a forum for authors of anime fanfiction,
this is an appropriate and often productive type of post. A lot
of good fics have come from this.
Told you so Gary ;)
* Amusing/informative essays or pieces which touch on
writing or anime.
Hmmmmm, that one looks like something that could be easily abused.
The following is spam.
* "Me toos" of any ilk. Private mail, people. It has already
been said.
Check, never done one unless I had something significant to add. Case
in point, the Ryouga Rapist thread. Instead of agreeing with the
majority that the fic was evil incarnate, I posted how OOC Ryouga was
and how a MAJOR element to the story was being ignored.
* Things which have nothing whatsoever to do with anime
or writing.
Check, never done one (I'm an Otaku, my mind doesn't comprehend topics
that are not anime related ;)
* Fic requests. Mail these to the author, guys. If you don't
know the e-mail addy of the author, ask around via private. If
you still don't know, then post.
Check, never had to. Sooner or later somone's gonna repost it and if
not I just ask my friends if I don't know the author.
* Character debates that have dragged on for way too long
and are now getting redundant, C&C threads which have
mutated into something different, and other such beasties.
Hmmmmmmm, that's awfully vague but I'm afraid I'm probably guilty on
this one.
* Lots of other things. You should know what they are.
NOOOOOO! Don't do that, your giving everyone an excuse to punish the
unknowing. Please, even God didn't leave us without SOME sort of manual.
The following are not only spam, but evil spam that shouldn't
be on the list under any circumstances.
<snip list>
You forgot one. Spam complaining about Spam. If you feel an author is
over the limit, tell him PRIVATELY. Don't be part of the problem when
your looking for a solution. If the writter won't stop, then let Tybalt
know. Though chances are he's already on the case.
* Posts intended for no other purpose than to produce more
spam. "What was the first book you ever read? Please spam."
This is the only one that I think there might be some redemtion for.
Here's what you do, post your poll question then have the responders
reply directly to you. Then after a set deadline, post the results.
Sometimes polls can be helpfull in determining the shape of things to
come (everyone polled seems to HATE Shampoo, let's see if I can write
her in a new light) Just make sure that the burden of the Spam falls on
the Poll taker and not the list.
When I think you're overdoing it, I'll warn you. Continue,
and you get the Nastier Warning. Keep going, and temporary
bans and permanent bans start coming into play.
Actually, it's more fun to play when there are rules to the game. To
tell you the truth, I always thought these punishments were in effect.
I will be giving authors and high-quality C&Cers more
slack than others. Why? Because, quite frankly, I'd hate to
lose them. I don't particularly care if a person who
contributes nothing and spams often gets booted.
Frantically digs up his fics and shows them. See? I produce, I produce!
In short, behave or leave.
This may sound nasty and strict, and some of you may wish
to wail about tyranny and other such things. Sorry. I am not
doing this because I get a kick out of pushing people around. I
don't _want_ this job; it's a waste of my valuable time. It's
being done because people have proven that they cannot
follow the rules with threat of punishment. I'm in a foul
mood about this, so don't expect sympathy.
Ummmmm, Tybalt? Nothing you said seemed out of the question. I don't
think anyone here will have a problem with it. Don't beat yourself up
over it, if I don't feel restricted then you can BET your not really
caging anyone in.
