My thanks to everyone who's given me feedback about "Awakening," the first
'episode' of Bubblegum Catgirl Nuku Nuku. Episode 2 is under way, but I
wanted to respond to some of the feedback . . .
(1) Why/how did Nuku Nuku just turn up at Raven's Garage?
Recall that Nuku Nuku 'woke up' in the (fairly intact) ruins of a
Mishima Heavy Industries cybernetics laboratory. If those ruins were in
the Fault somewhere, chances are (to my thinking) good that they'd be in
"Timex City," the quasi-industrial area in which Raven's Garage is also
located.
There's also the small matter that I couldn't think of any scenes
to follow Nuku Nuku aimlessly wandering around MegaTokyo . . . at least
not yet.
(2) Raven's/Sylia's reactions to Nuku Nuku
Dr. Raven said that there were old rumors that Natsume Kyuusaku (a
leading cyberneticist, in his time) had built a functional android - but
also that it had to be shut down. So when Nuku Nuku identifies Kyuusaku as
her 'father,' he immediately makes the connection between Natsume-hakase
and Nuku Nuku, especially given her apparent and actual ages.
As for Sylia's reaction: Natsume Kyuusaku was one of Katsuhito
Stingray's teachers. (Dr. Raven said as much in Sylia's absence). It's
entirely possible that Sylia had met either Kyuusaku (unlikely) or
Ryuunosuke (more plausible); either way, she would have been familiar with
the fabled Natsume android by reputation and/or rumor.
(Let me jump back a bit, chronologically: Dr. Stingray had to
learn mechatronics and biotechnology somewhere. Cybernetics would have
been a part of his studies, either in mechatronics directly or as a
related field. We don't know yet what happened to the Natsume family after
Nuku Nuku was deactivated, but Kyuusaku 'retired' from the practical field
of cybernetics and became a full-time teacher, eventually becoming a
professor at some university - at least, that's the posited timeline for
this story. While at the university, Kyuusaku wound up teaching the young
Katsuhito Stingray; it's possible that Stingray befriended Ryuunosuke -
*BUT* this is getting to parts of the story and backstory that I
deliberately want to keep vague for the moment. Trust me, a lot of
questions will be answered as the series continues. Okay? :)
(3) Priss' reaction to an android's presence:
Raven's Garage also houses the Knight Sabers' training and testing
facility. BGC fans know this, or should be familiar with the fact. ;)
Now, place yourself in the Knight Sabers' shoes: you're coming out of a
training session in a secret facility, you're in a part of MegaTokyo that
not many Boomers show up in (if any), and then you find out that an
android has found the place you're in -
Go from there. Priss doesn't know that Nuku Nuku isn't affiliated
with Genom (or rather, that she's trying to break away), Priss *also*
doesn't know that Nuku Nuku really has no idea where she is, and certainly
wasn't looking for the Knight Sabers. Priss strikes me as highly
suspicious verging on paranoid where Boomers or similar creations are
concerned, and would be particularly so on what she considered home
ground.
If you were a Knight Saber and a potential Genom operative (human
or Boomer) was that close to finding out who you were, what would be
*your* reaction if you were as hot-tempered as Priss?
Note that Priss does not actually draw; she starts to reach for
her gun, Sylia stops her, Priss acquiesces.
I do still welcome feedback on these questions, but I ask that you send
feedback to *me* by private e-mail, rather than to the FFML at large.
Also, as a side note: how in tarnation did a response to my story mutate
into a flame-thread? That was disconcerting, to say the least. If you're
going to flame, *please* keep the line of fire away from the bystanders,
okay? That goes double if your flame isn't related to the original topic.
It's been said before, it'll be said again: save flames for private
e-mail, okay? Thank you.
