A Devil Hunter Yohko/She-Hulk crossover

Nightraven, you are a friend among friends for putting up with me!

Emerald Daze

Day 2
--------
By She-Hulk (brobinso@neocomm.net)

She-Hulk wrapped her arms tighter around the pillow and frowned at the
sudden intrusion of light. The smells of hot, fresh baked bread and coffee
pulled her inexorably towards conciseness. She groaned and rolled over onto
her back as she forced her eyes to open. The absence of color was rather
startling and she jerked upright to stare at her surroundings. "Oh no!"

There was only a large bed and a familiar table and chair on the page.
Jennifer glared at the author and laid back down, pulling the covers over
her head. Her voice was muffled. "Go away! I don't want anything to do with
you! You set me up and broke our deal, then you had the gall to leave me at
those twisted bitches mercy!"

The author sighed. The sudden creak of leather, the rattle of chains and
the sharp crack of a whip had Jennifer leaping from the bed. She frantically
searched the area and glared at the author when the bed disappeared. "That
was low, even for you."

Her night shirt was replaced by khaki slacks and a long-sleeved dark blue
shirt. Jen looked down at the casual loafers and shook her head. "I can't
figure you out. You drop me into an ultra violent story, blow me up,
threaten me, hand me over to your partner's goons and yet you go out of your
way to dress me in comfortable, normal clothes. Why bother?"

	# Whatever disagreements we may have over stories have nothing to do with
the fact that I like you. You have a great attitude (sometimes) and you're
fun to work with (usually). I don't want to be lumped together with that
bunch that kept dressing you like a street walker. I am not the monster you
make me out to be. #

"Right." She plopped down into the chair and helped herself to a
croissant. "What twisted little idea has occurred to you now?"

The large screen appeared and Jen watched a young dark haired girl storm
across a playground. She was chasing what appeared to be a demon. Jen wasn't
sure, not really having that much experience with things like that.
Marauding space aliens were more her speed. The girl swung a long sword and
sliced the demon in two. The remains dissolved and Jennifer made a sound of
approval. "Nice. At least I don't have to worry about stains." She cast a
wary glance at the author. "Do you have a plot this time or are you just
going to toss me in blind again?"

	# Oh, I have a plot. A horde of demons has escaped from one of the other
animes and they're popping up in the strangest places. You get to go through
the different animes and hunt them down. #

She groaned and rubbed her eyes. "I suppose this means that I'm going to
land in every anime you can think of, doesn't it?"

	# You bet! #

"Okay. Where am I going today?" The picture changed and she saw the same
girl wearing a school uniform. Jen sighed. "I'm going to stand out like a
sore thumb, you know?"

	# Don't worry. Once things get rolling no one is going to be paying much
attention to you. The girl's name is Yohko. She is a devil hunter, the 108th
generation, in fact. The mantle of devil hunter is passed from mother to
daughter and is a closely guarded family secret. You see the strange
bracelet she's wearing? That calls her 'soul sword'. The one you saw
earlier." Jen felt a tingling around her arm and looked down to find a thick
gold bracelet around her left wrist. A dragon was curled around the surface,
it's ruby eye winking in the light.

	# Since you'll be doing this a lot, I thought it would help if you had
your own weapon. It will react to whatever universe you're in and become the
appropriate weapon for the situation. #

"You know I don't like weapons. Why do you keep pushing them on me?" Jen
tried to find a catch to remove the bracelet, but there was none. She
gripped it with the intention of breaking it.

	# I wouldn't do that if I were you. Kahm came up with the idea and
designed it. If you break it, she'll be mad. #

Jennifer thought of the twins and suppressed a little shudder. "All right,
all right."

	# I understand your views, but let's be reasonable here. # The screen
flashed and a sea of demons was visible. They ranged in size, but all were
ugly. # Do you really want to tear these things apart with your bare hands? #

'Swords are good. Swords I can handle. So, when do I leave?"

	# Now. #

The vortex swirled and She-Hulk was gone.

^_^

Yohko saw the vortex appear over the playground and dropped her
chopsticks. No one else noticed the anomaly as she ran behind the tall hedge
that encircled the school grounds.

Jen fell the ten feet to the pavement and glared up at the vortex as it
disappeared. "Will you stop dropping me!?!"

There was high pitched scream and She-Hulk groaned. "Not again!" There was
a mass exodus as the students fled and Jen wondered how she was supposed to
contact this Yohko, if she couldn't ask anyone where to find her. "Okay,
hotshot! What do I do now?"

	# Duck. #

"What?" The whistle of a blade slicing the sir answered her question and
she rolled away as the sword rushed by. Jen gained her feet and stared down
at the very girl she'd been sent to find. She held up her hands and spoke
quickly. "I'm not a bad guy! I've been sent to help you fight a horde of
demons that's going to be running through your anime soon!"

Yohko paused and stared at the giant green woman. She looked like a demon
to her. "Why should I believe you. The last time I listened to a demon, I
was almost seduced! How do I know you're not here to finish the job?"

Jen wasn't quite sure how to reply to that so she didn't. "Look, my name
is Jennifer Walters. I really am here to help." The sun winked off of her
bracelet and she had an idea. "Give me a second." She shot a look at the
author. "All right. How do I turn this thing on?"

	# Uh...just a second. #

	"What's wrong?"

	# I need to figure out how it works. #

"You don't know how it works?!" Jen stared at the author in disbelief.
"Why did you make me take this thing if you couldn't even tell me what to do
with it?"

	# I told you, Kahm designed it. She gave me a list of instructions. I just
have to find it. # Jennifer saw the mess covering the author's desk and
sighed.

She turned to Yohko. "I was going to show you a really neat display of
animated outfit changing, but it seems the instructions have been lost.
Can't you just trust me now and if it turns out later I'm lying, you can
kill me then?"

Yohko thought about it for a moment and nodded. "All right, but I'll be
watching you!"

"Of that I have no doubt." Jen looked down at the young devil hunter,
noticing her outfit for the first time. "That's cool! Very dramatic!"

Yohko blushed and waved a hand. "It's just the standard devil hunter
thing. Where did you say you came from?"

"Actually I didn't, but I'm from New York, in the United States. When did
you start the devil hunter business? The author said it was a family thing,
but when did your mother pass it on to you?"

Yohko laughed and leaned against her sword, the tip on the ground beside
her. "My mother wasn't a devil hunter. She lost her virginity before my
grandmother complete her training. I was next in line."

"Uhhh, right. Well, I wonder what we should do now?" Jen was beginning to
wish that the horde of demon's would appear. The author, still searching for
the instructions, granted her wish.

The sky darkened ominously and thunder shook the ground as the sky seemed
to split wide. They emerged from the crack in a screaming wave and headed
straight for the two-

"Hold it!" Jennifer got as close to the author as she could, keeping in
mind the force field. 'Hold it right there! I was being sarcastic! And I was
merely thinking about it! You can't pluck my thoughts out and turn them
against me!"

	# Yes I can. #

	"No, you can't!"

	# Yes, I can! #

	"NO!

	# YES! #

Yohko tapped Jennifer on the shoulder and pointed behind them. The horde
had stopped and were waiting for them to finish their argument. Jen stared
at the demons and frowned. She pointed to each as she counted them.
".....forty-seven, forty-eight, forty-nine, fifty! There's only fifty of
them?" The author met her questioning gaze with a shrug.

	# Take all of the animes, divide them into your average horde and it comes
out to about forty to fifty demons per anime. Did you think I was going to
drop the whole horde on you? #

"Actually, I hadn't thought about it. Oh well, I suppose we should get
started?" Yohko nodded and they turned back to the demons. "God, they're
ugly!"

The group let out a collective growl and She-Hulk realized that her
comment had been a mistake. As they attacked, she called out to the author.
"Find those instructions, Now!"

	# Jackpot! Uh oh. #

Jen smashed a demon into the pavement and dodged the huge fist that was
aimed at her head. "What do you mean, 'uh oh'?"

	# It looks like the cat chewed up the list. Sorry. #

"I can't (urgh) believe (uh) you!" Jen tossed the demon back at it's
companions and jumped out of the way as a large purple one tried to catch
her from behind. She saw Yohko slicing her way through the crowd and wished
she had a sword like that. No sooner had the thought formed than her
bracelet began to react.

Jennifer looked down to see her clothes vanish and she blushed as she
began to spin in mid air. New clothes formed around her and she found
herself holding a long sword. She landed and studied her costume. The dress
was similar to Yohko's only it was white with a green and black yin yang
symbol on her chest. She lifted the sword and stared. It was over six feet
long and the blade seemed to be made of green crystal. A dragon's head
formed the handle and guard and a familiar red eye winked at her.

A demon charged her and the sword sliced it neatly in half. Jen's smile
was huge as she began to dispatch the creatures around her.

	An incredibly short time later...

As the last demon vanished, Jennifer wiped the sweat from her face and
turned to Yohko. "Looks like that's the last of them."

Yohko nodded and rested her blade on her shoulder. "Thank you for your
help. It could have been much worse without your assistance."

Jennifer smiled and shook her head. "I don't think so. It just would have
taken you longer, but I guess there had to be some reason why I dropped in."

A bell rang from within the depths of the school and a panicked look
crossed Yohko's face. "Oh no! I've missed Algebra! Mrs. Toshinma is going to
kill me!" Her clothes reverted back to normal and she waved at She-Hulk as
she turned to race into the building. "Good-bye Jen! Thanks again!" And then
she was gone.

"That's it? No dramatic ending? No critical last fight scene?"

	# Sorry, but that's all. Did you want to have to fight to the death with
some hopelessly strong opponent? #

"No, but I thought that was what you were after." The vortex swirled and
Jennifer sat down at her table with a disgruntled look. Her cup appeared and
she sipped the strong brew as she waited for the author to stop writing
needless background stuff and explain.

	# Cut that out! I figured I owed you an easy one after what I did. #

"Ah ha! So you admit that you were wrong!" Jen's smug look disappeared as
one of the twins appeared. Her chair toppled over as Jen began to back away
quickly. "W-What are you-"

Utsu smiled at She-Hulk's reaction and laid an envelope on the table. "I'm
just delivering something for the Mistress." She winked at Jen and
disappeared.

The small white envelope sat innocently on the table. Jen approached it as
if it contained a bomb. She drew out a folded piece of paper and laughed in
nervous relief when she read it. "It's the instructions for the bracelet." A
small scribble at the bottom caught her attention and she paled. Not an easy
feat with her complexion.

	# What does it say? #

Jen crumpled the paper and tossed it at the author. It hit the shield and
was incinerated. "Your partner wants me in one of her stories. Tell her
thanks, but no thanks."

	# That's a wise decision. She's rather...unstable. #

"I know that! After fifteen minutes alone with the twins, you think I
don't?" Jen righted her chair and sat back down. She looked up at the author
and gestured to the table. "I don't suppose I could get some dinner?"

	# No problem. #

The author left her to dine as she began to edit the story and correct any
mistakes. She didn't tell her that the Ustu shouldn't have been able to
bounce into her story. Kahm was away for the weekend. A quick check
confirmed her suspicions and the author frowned at the empty page on Kahm's
computer. No, she wouldn't tell Jennifer. She had enough to worry about
without knowing that the twins were loose.
