To phoneyNT: How could you know it was so bad? You weren't there. Do you get all of your opinions based on second hand info?
First of all--for those who didn't know it, I ran the Channel.
Me.
GT. I opped only two people; one was an IRC cop for Terratron, the
other will remain nameless if he wants.
To FFML and prospective IRC'ers::
The channel was not moderated, In any way other than a 'level of courtesy.'
I asked everyone, in turn, about their fics, what they had written, and
if they had anything they were working on that they'd like to voice. There
were lurkers and there were writers, including myself(least importance),
Richard Lawson(briefly), Mr. Kleppe, J Palmer(colours), and a few others
who wandered in and out, Marisa Price, and many I can't remember.
Everyone could speak at any time, it was in no way MODERATED. I would
suggest that others be kind and let someone have the floor, but it did
drift off frequently on tangent and took some time before we got back to
the discussion (I believe the lemon tangent would be a good example, gang.)
If PhoneyNT wishes to claim falsehoods from second hand information about Moderation, then I suggest his source whom did come to please learn the IRC term 'MODERATION.'
QUOTH PHONEYNT
>As for you people who made that decision...if you >disagree, bring it on. The nick's Phoney, I'll be glad >to outline to you that #fanfic is a channel for fanfic >_discussion_, not some kind of silly monologue. >Everyone is supposed to talk. I don't care how crazy >a motherfucking channel gets man, the point of irc >is the free and dynamic discussion of whatever people >feel like saying.
And Phoney? There is nothing stopping you from making your own channel
and having complete and total chaos emerge from it inhabitants, and there
is nothing stopping anyone else. Nor is there anything stopping anyone
from joining BOTH channels.
Besides, phrasing a message like this is just asking for flames, so
if you do, please add a "REPLY PRIVATELY" disclaimer to your messages.
You know we don't need that crap on the FFML.
And as for the '...you people who made that decision...' That would
be me and me alone. Yes it was MY channel, but everyone there was MY GUEST,
and MY CHANNEL wouldn't have meant -a damn thing- if nobody joined it;
so I tried to show as much courtesy and respect(except for piccolo, that
american cartoon krack couldn't have gone unanswered.) to my guests by
politely ASKING others to give up some of their bandwidth time so that
someone might speak a little.
Yes, this isn't a frenzied or energetic method like(shudder) AOL chat
rooms, or something bizarre like ICHAT, or even a lot or IRC channels,
but that is the way I conducted it.
If you disagree with me or Colliding SYmphonies, then don't join our channel. Like I said to Phoney NT, make your own and invite people from My channel. I don't mind, and I'm sure they wouldn't either.
------
Look, I'll be frank with everyone. There is immaturity everywhere. I tried to conduct the channel in a professional fashion. Yes it was a bit slow for a first meeting, and yes I was one of the only people with Op power, but the IRCop could Op themself so they don't count, and the other never even spoke about it.
I've seen great things go down because of people forgetting why they
started doing it.
There's a great scare on AOL that if you offend someone in a chat room
they can report you for a Terms Of Service violation and get your account
destroyed with almost no proof. Another crummy social game.
In IRC, people get kicked out of their own channels (look what happened
to half the people on the old #ranma channel) and then the channel just
die out because they didn't take care of it.
I was really paranoid that someone up there on the FFML was going to look at the spam that was being generated as this list became -too social- and just give up an say "Fuck it, I don't want to deal with this."
Now we've got banning of most web based mail, and Tybalt politely saying "don't do that again please' and the like, and the list is quieting down for the stories again.
I ran the channel with a bit of relaxed professionalism. I wanted calm chat and I wanted to keep it calm os nothing would be missed, and the only way I knew 100% for certain I could do that would be to keep the Op power to myself. And there were some great ideas thrown around too! One from piccolo was about the water splashin old lady from Ranma1/2---he got together with a pal and decided she'd be a member of a Yakuza circle!
If that isn't innovative or original, I don't know what to tell you.
I want to keep the channel open for those who know what its all about and remember. . .
If you've read this far, then Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Geoffrey TY
