No, no, no. It's a TEST remember? You can set up the situation so that it
happens so quickly they have no time to wonder if it's a test or how to best
pass it.
Think of it like this: Ranma and Hikaru are together, suddenly they find
themselves in danger. They have no time to wonder if it is real or just make
believe. The situation is such that if they try to save each other, they won't
be able to save themselves. How will they choose? During this, you can have
other "people" try to convince them to abandon the other, because the survivor
will have Ranma's body to him(her)self. Now do you get it?
