"Why not?"

Twisted plot, tortured souls, unusual heroes, and villians with
personality. Pretty much the elements I've associated with
manga/anime stories. BTW what org. stories did you read?

death gate novels by Margret wies and tracy hickman, actually way of the
pilgrim by gorden r dickson is very anime

Let's look at the wide, wide range of anime:

Grave of the Fireflies
The Wings of Honnamise (sorry, can't spell it)
Lensman
Slam Dunk
Sailor Moon
Ghost in the Shell
Maison Ikkoku
End of Summer
Pretty Fighter Miku
Record of Lodoss Wars
The Humanoid
Here is Greenwood
Dragon Knight
Whispers of the Wind
Coo
Nausicca
Legend of Galactic Heroes
Heroic Legend of Arislan
La Blue Girl
Hyperdolls
Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro

.... from where I sit, there isn't any specific anime type of story.
