can't see that. Ranma, on the other hand, with the big mouth and fancy
martial arts skills...

No... I think Tenchi would have to be the "5th element", given the
prologue.  Ryoko would go well as the cab driver...  You'd have to
seriously diverge to fit Ayeka in, though....  The plot could stand some
expansion, anyhow.
