Subject: Interesting thought....

I was talking with a co-worker about anime, and I was describing some of
my favorite anime (Tenchi Muyo, El-Hazard, Ranma 1/2, OMG) and he pointed
out something rather interesting.

In those three at least, and I expect in many other highly popular
romantic comedy anime/manga, the same thing can be said about the
romantic relationships:

The woman is the aggressor. She makes ALL of the moves on the guy.

Think about it. In all their cases, the guy doesn't do anything special
to get the girls after him, he merely is himself, and the girls just
"fall" for him.

They're not even particularly special people, if you really want to get
down to it. Yet, they're 'hot property'.

As my colleague said, this may be one of the main attractions of this
type of anime/manga. The fantasy that a normal guy, LIKE ONE OF US (OK,
Ranma's kind of an exception, but...), has girls just chasing after him.

Does this happen in real life? Rarely at best. It's usually on the
guy's head to make the first move to ask the girl out, to take each step
in the relationship, etc... (OK, that's assuming classical gender roles,
but still.)

Just a thought.
