No. They can't. Simply put, a trained sniper with a custom rifle can
knock out anyone at any time given a convenient situation. Needless to
say, this is a rather daunting idea. The entire cast of Ranma could
easily be put 6 feet under, on their back in a box without much problem.
A gun, a car and a few rounds of Black Talons would tear them to shreds.
No ki blast, no special technique, nothing at all could save them if they
were simply shot without any warning.
I think you're oversimplifying the situation, and that was the
problem I had with that scene. Against real-life martial arts -- no, of
course not. Against anime/mystic-level style martial arts -- it becomes
iffy.
For instance -- the anime tradition would have had Cologne easily
avoid that sniper shot. The moment the gun was raised and aimed against
her, she would have sensed the hostile intentions of the attacker and
taken some kind of precaution. Unless the sniper was some kind of zen
master or equivalent martial expert, able to eliminate his intentions from
his own mind, Cologne would have had some kind of warning.
The problem as I see it is that you've inserted a very real,
dangerous, and deadly level of violence into the Ranmaverse, without
giving an equivalent boost to the cast (ie. realistic consequences to
their martial arts (broken bones, etc.), chi attacks (blasting people in
two), and skills (danger sensing, or whatever). Well, in my opinon. . . .
In hand to hand combat, there wouldn't be a problem for the Ranma cast.
This isn't the case and will never be the case in this story. At least,
not that I have planned thus far.
As for inserting in a deadly level of violence, well that's why there's
the dark tag. I wanted something more real and more substantial than
anything I'd done before.
The other thing I wonder is _why_ he would wipe these people out.
The guy's a dangerous psycho with no qualms about killing, but he's also
following a carefully planned agenda. Knocking of everyone he talks to
can only serve to draw attention to him, but his enemies on their guard,
and get the police -- or higher law-enforcement types -- involved.
That's Genjuro's objective. He -wants- other people to get involved and
he definitely wants Ranma to do something...
