confusion that David mentioned. There's not a lot of differences between
'Disciples of God' and 'Messengers of God'.
Here's where a bit of kanji knowledge comes in mighty handy.
"Tenshi" is formed by two characters: "ten" = sky/heaven, "shi"=
ambassador/envoy. (This comes straight from my mother's knowledge of
Chinese.)
"Shito" is also formed by two characters. I don't know the meaning
of the second character, unfortunately, but the first, "shi"...is exactly
the same character as the "shi" in "tenshi".
Both are, indeed, ambassadors, only one is heaven-sent, the other
is one of this Earth, at least, in the original meaning. And in the case
of the 17th "Angel"...well, that would be a spoiler.

I think also, that director Anno's intent (I can't comment about Sadamoto's
intent since I've only read one issue of the manga) that the Angels *were*
Sadamoto hasn't really gotten into that aspect, yet. For that
matter, Sadamoto isn't into the obscure mysteries, he's into the
characters, which I do really like.

Some proof for this comes from the title, as well. As Andrew put it, in
'Evanjellydoughnut', "Did anyone notice that there's an 'Angel' in
'Ev*Angel*ion'." ^_^ Whether it's intentional or not is another matter...
:) Heh! One other thing, though: "Evangelium" is German for the
Gospel, and that is where the folks at Gainax picked it up from
originally. Nevertheless....

that, and I beleive this is in 'Revelations', that Lucifer took one third
of the creator's angels when he defied God. 'Shito' in Evangelion might not
be referring to disciples of the Almighty.
Note also that the representation of Lucifer's face is all over
EVA--such as the 3rd Angel's face itself. Then, there's the opening
credits, where you see this figure with that face and twelve wings. That
would be Lucifer himself, before his Fall.

I rather like the idea of a fic in which an Evangelion unit and it's pilot
*count* as a dark, Old Testament style angel, and the enemy 'Angels'
represent the forces of Satan.

Any takers?
I'd love to, but I don't want to dig myself another grave. :)
People are breathing down my neck enough as it is....
