OK, crazy college boys Fujinami-kun and Saotome-kun agree to an
engagement, when they have kids, to support their concept of a Martial
Arts Hamajaya. (Strange business model here.)

Genma hears from Mrs Fujinami that they have a girl and so goes to raise
Ranma as a proper man and martial artist.  (The girl will be the waitress,
see?)

A few months before going to visit the Fujinamis, Genma gets a postcard
(finally, they must have a Hibiki delivering the mail), and it seems that
Mr Fujinami is very proud of his son.

Hmm... Well it's nothing that a quick trip to China can't cure.

Oddly enough, Ryuu-kun doesn't seem to be interested in girls, but perhaps
a bit of parental pressure can change his (er her) mind.

The only problem is that the two "sons" have been raised as martial
artists and so nobody can cook .... until Ukyou shows up.
