It's not just Jewish boys. Though I'm sure the author didn't want us to
delve so deeply into this subject, many boys nowadays are circumcized for
medical purposes (ie Less risk of infection, etc.).

It's more tradition than anything else.  The added risk of infection is
pretty much nil, assuming one is clean.  Of course, the notion of my
own son circumcised by a mohel (sp?), as opposed to a doctor, is not one
that I care to think of. :)
