Soapbox rant of my own coming up:
Why *not* name names? Seems like that would be the most helpful thing
you could do for the authors. I haven't written any Slayers fics, but if
I had, I think I'd be scratching my head right about now wondering which
of this applies to my stuff.
Nothing personal, 2f, but this sort of thing bugs me. Talking in the
abstract isn't the way to help people improve their writing. I've read
lots of expounding by Taleswapper and others about "Annoying new
characters" in Ranma fics, but I never know whether or not *my* new
characters are annoying until people actually read my fics and tell me.
The main reason why I decided not to name names, so to speak, is because
I wasn't trying to attack a bunch of SPECIFIC fanfics. I wanted to
express general trends. Anything on the list is an item I saw in three
fanfics at least, the stronger ones popping up more than that. If a
writer sees the list I wrote and thinks they may have that in their work,
it's up to them to decide if they agree that what I pointed out is a
problem or not, and if they want to leave it or change it; their work,
really, I'm just observing. Plus a lot of the lesser problems are more
taste and style issues than global fanfiction issues.
Accusing various stories of having these problems would turn it from
a community checkup to a blacklist of problem stories. But if a writer
wants me to C+C their stuff relating to this on a one to one level,
though, I'd be happy to; just point me at the work, and I'll give it
a looksee. (That way I could also point out the good things, too, which
you can't do in a generalized way; I tried to think of trends which
were positive to include in my post, but negative ones are easier to
spot... my failing, I'd hazard.)
In short : I was trying to have nothing personal, too. :) I'm a slack
guy, I can deal with not causing a lot of unrest. I was worried what
I DID post was gonna get me lynched, anyway...
