Greetings! Well, I've had what I consider a good amount of responses to the
teaser I posted a while ago, so I went with it, and lo, was this brought
forth. I repost the teaser portion of the story, so if you've already read
it, you can skip to the new part, and if you haven't read it, you can start
from the beginning. Here's some notes, first:

Well, the most important thing I have to say is this: The title 'Double
Trouble' is already used by a fanfic out there, so the search for a new title
for my fic is more urgent than I believed. Anyone got some ideas for a good
title which matches the plot? Also...

Just to recap, this is a self insertion which I think is centered on an
original concept. It is set after the last manga volume. It has not been
preread, although it has been spell-checked, and I think I good relatively
grammer have. :) Oh, and I would love, love, love feedback! C&C forever
welcome. Now, on with the fic!

DISCLAIMER: The characters in this fic (except me!) are property of Rumiko
Takahashi (the Great), and I use them without permission.

Double Trouble - Chapter One

The weekend afternoons in Nerima were often the busiest time for merchants
and shop owners, and this Saturday was no exception. Restaurants were packed
as people ate their meals, and sellers cried their wares to scrutinizing
customers along the sidewalks. Through all the chaos, one particular young
woman struggled to push past the crowded streets, occasionally pausing to ask
a passerby some questions. She had short, dark hair, and wore fashionable,
casual clothes. Many of the people she passed recognized her and gave her a
friendly smile and wave, which she returned, along with a nervous laugh. The
girl continued to walk, wearing a confused expression and glancing from left
to right to
find something familiar. Adjusting the glasses she wore with her forefinger,
she closely observed each building she passed. This apparently kept her from
watching where she was going, because she ran right into another woman on the
street. Both fell to the ground, emitting quiet grunts as they landed.
"Oh, my," said the elder female, as she straitened herself up and began
collecting the groceries she had dropped. Once everything was in order, she
glanced at the bespectacled girl who had also managed to stand and was
brushing herself off. A smile bloomed on her face. "Akane!" she exclaimed,
as she readjusted her ponytail to lay over her shoulder. The smile faded a
little as the taller girl examined the younger one. "Why are you wearing
glasses?" she wondered, as the short-haired girl smiled uncomfortably.
"He-hello, Kasumi," she responded, slowly backing away. Something made her
stop moving, however, and she looked at the smiling sister determinedly. "Are
you going back to the, uh, dojo right now?" asked Akane hesitantly, ignoring
Kasumi's question.
"Why, yes," Kasumi answered happily. "I just finished shopping for food, so
I'm heading back home."
"Well, then, I think I will join you," the youngest Tendo decided, and they
both moved off together, Akane trailing Kasumi ever so slightly. The walk
back was a silent one. Kasumi's motherly instincts warned her that Akane was
disturbed for some reason, and wanted to be left alone. When they arrived at
the front door of the household, Kasumi smiled kindly at Akane and placed a
dainty hand on her sister's shoulder.
"I'm going to start dinner soon, Akane, so I'll be in the kitchen," she told
the girl, making her voice as gentle as she could. "If you ever need to talk,
just come on in." She then moved through the door into the cooking area, and
Akane was left alone inside the entranceway.

I looked around the house. Some things looked familiar, but I didn't know
where most of the doors led. I heard some muffled sounds and decided to
follow them to see where I would end up. I eventually found myself outside an
open door, looking into what must have been the dojo area. Inside was _THE_
Ranma, going through what I assumed to be a kata. He was very graceful, I had
to admit. Unconsciously pushing my glasses back onto the bridge of my nose, I
watched him for a while. Eventually he noticed me, and put on a roguish grin.
*Uh, oh,* I thought, *here we go.* I was not looking forward to any of this,
but I had to start somewhere.
"Hey, Akane," the pig-tailed boy said, sauntering over towards me. "Come for
another match?" Then he noticed my attire, which was a pair of white jean-
shorts, and a blue and white striped T-shirt, not the normal gi I bet he was
expecting. "I guess not," he continued. Then he began to inspect my face.
"What's with the glasses?"
I guess I couldn't help but play the part for a little bit. I stuck my
tongue out at him. "People use them to see better," I explained, as if I were
talking to a three-year old. He looked at me flatly, and then bent down to
pick up a towel from its place on the floor.
"I meant, since when did you wear them?" he asked again, now heading for the
door as he wiped himself off. I moved to let him out, and followed him down
the hall. This was not how I wanted to start my explanation, so I scrounged
for a false answer.
"Oh, uh, I just wanted to see how I looked in them, is all," I mumbled,
looking at the ground as I walked behind him. Ranma laughed.
"Well, you look dorky, that's what. Ha ha! Isn't that great? Now I have an
uncute, non-sexy, DORKY tomboy fiancee. Ha ha ha." The grinning cursed-boy
turned around to see my reaction. I frowned at the 'dorky' crack, but I knew
it would do no good to get angry. Seeing that I wasn't going to respond,
Ranma gave me a strange look and then shrugged. He returned to walking
through the house and I continued following. *Hmmm,* I thought, *maybe Ranma
isn't the best person to start with. I guess I should start with the person
who's going to be most affected by me.* That issue resolved, I nodded and
began thinking about other matters. Suddenly Ranma's voice carried me away
from my thoughts. "Uh, Akane?" he was saying, and the odd look was back. I
looked around and immediately a blush came to my face. Apparently I had
followed him into the bathroom and shut the door behind me without thinking.
I reddened even further and bowed nervously because I didn't know what else to
do.
"Sorry!" I yelped, backing up against the door and trying to find the handle
behind my back. Once my hand clasped onto it, and slid it open and stepped
out, my eyes shooting everywhere but at Ranma. Before he could say anything
more, I closed the door and then hurried down the hall, trying to compose
myself. Eventually I came to the staircase and I pondered whether or not to
go up it. *What the hell, may as well get this over with,* I decided, making
my way up the stairs. Once at the top, I glanced at all the doors on the
upper floor. Sure enough, one of them had a wooden, duck-shaped sign, with
'Akane' written on it. I walked to that door, and paused for a moment,
building up my courage. Finally, I raised my hand to the door's surface, and
gave three timid knocks. A moment of silence passed, and then I heard a quiet
"Come in" sound from the other side. I closed my eyes and took one final deep
breath, preparing myself for what was to come. Slowly, I turned the knob of
the door, and let myself in.
The room looked much like I expected it to; the placement of the bed, the
window, and the adorning objects were all as I remembered them. Finally my
eyes landed on a young woman with short hair sitting on a chair. She had her
nose stuck in a comic book. Her feet were raised and resting on her desktop,
and she looked totally at ease. I grimaced at how that peace was about to be
shattered. When I made no noise, the girl casually glanced in my direction to
see who had interrupted her. I suppose, to her, it was like looking in a
mirror when there was no mirror.
Naturally, she began to scream at the top of her lungs.

By the time the rest of the family had arrived at Akane's door, the girl had
finally stopped screaming. In fact, everyone was totally silent, as they
stared at the sight before them. There stood two Akanes, one calmly regarding
her twin, while the other stared back with wide eyes. They looked exactly the
same, except that one was wearing a skirt and sweatshirt and the other was
wearing shorts, a T-shirt, and glasses. Soun was the first to speak.
"Which one is the real one?" he whispered, too overwhelmed to even wail.
Akane (the one in the skirt) turned her head to face the group at the door.
"I am!" she yelled, flushing with anger. Ranma and Kasumi nodded their
agreement; the upset girl on their left was acting much more like Akane than
the person they had been talking to earlier that day. Ranma narrowed his eyes
as he watched the Akane with glasses.
"Just who are you, then?" he asked. "Copycat Ken?" The others regarded her
suspiciously as well. The Akane double sighed.
"No, I'm not Copycat Ken," she said. "But before I answer you, could you
please give me a kettle of hot water?" She looked at the gathering of people,
and after a slight pause, Kasumi fished a kettle from out of nowhere and
walked slowly towards the girl. She took it, thanked the Tendo sister, and
then proceeded to dump the pot of water over herself. Suddenly, the second
Akane changed. She grew a bit taller, her chest downsized somewhat, and her
hair became blonde and wavy. Her face changed its features, and then there
was a completely different girl. "I'm Erin Laue," she said, sheepishly. The
irony of the situation caused her to smirk. "Sorry about this."

As I expected, everyone in the room face-faulted. Their jaws dropped open,
and they all stared at me. I grew uncomfortable from being the center of
attention, and began to fidget and laugh nervously. Nabiki was the first to
come out of the shock, which was unsurprising to me, and she relaxed and
regarded me calmly. The others eventually shook off their disbelief as well,
and I watched each of them to see how they were reacting.
Soun and Genma exchanged similar looks of confusion, and then finally
shrugged in acceptance. Apparently the two friends didn't care who or what I
was, as long as their daily lives weren't disrupted too much. They left the
room to go start a game of shogi.
Kasumi was all smiles again, returning to her role as perfect host. Living
with this kind of family, I guess she was used to dealing with unexpected
things like me all the time. She too retreated through the door, to go make
some tea. That left me with Nabiki, Ranma, and Akane. I smiled weakly at
them. Ranma was edging closer to Akane, without even realizing it, I thought.
Maybe he thought I was dangerous, and felt the need to protect her. After
all, they had had more than enough expert martial artist enemies; it would
make sense if I were another one. Akane didn't seem to notice Ranma coming to
stand by her, because she was too busy frowning at me. I assumed she was
upset with me because it looked like I had stolen her body. I hoped we could
become friends eventually, though.
"Let me guess," Nabiki stated, in her slightly sarcastic voice. "You're an
American who was visiting China for some reason, and fell into the
Akaneniichuan. Am I right? If so, how did you know about us, or where to
find us?" She looked ready to grill me, so I raised my hand to interrupt her.
"I know you have a lot of questions, and I'll answer them. To begin: you
are right, I am from America. However, I did not fall into _the_
Akaneniichuan; I fell into _an_ Akaneniichuan. An American Akaneniichuan, to
be exact." This statement also brought blank stares to their faces. I
sighed. "How about we go downstairs to have that tea, and I can tell you my
story?" I suggested, gesturing toward the door. They nodded, and the four of
us filed out of the entranceway, with me in-between Nabiki and Ranma. I could
feel them watching me, and I wished they would just get over it. I don't like
feeling self-conscious.

The group of teenagers walked downstairs and entered the family room, where
Kasumi had just finished placing her tea items on the eating table. Soun and
Genma were off to the side, at their game. They paused to watch the children,
both trying to cheat while the other looked away. All of the younger people
sat around the table, and Kasumi dispensed the tea. The blonde gaijin girl
took hers and sipped politely. The others waited for her to speak, and
finally she set her cup down and looked at them.
"Let's see, where should I begin?" she asked herself, apparently trying to
decide something in her mind. Nodding, she continued. "As I said, my name's
Erin, and I come from the United States... However, I'm not really from this
planet." Nabiki gave her a flat look.
"You're contradicting yourself, honey," she commented. The middle Tendo
sister had been observing the young woman carefully, and now had her engraved
in her brain. Blue eyes, around five feet, eight inches tall, average weight
for an American: Nabiki catalogued these facts and memorized her face.
This person was unlike any of the others that had previously disrupted their
lives. Definitely not a well-conditioned martial artist here to kidnap Akane,
or seek vengeance on Ranma. The only plausible thing that Erin could have
been that they had seen before was a new fiancee for Ranma, and Nabiki doubted
that. *But whatever events transpire from this new arrival,* the shrewd girl
thought to herself, *I'll do my best to see our side has the advantage.
Whether this girl is _on_ our side or not, well, I'll have to see.* Nabiki
turned her attention back to what Erin was saying.
"Do you all believe that their can be alternate dimensions?" she asked,
taking in all the listeners. "You know, like other universes where anything
and everything has happened differently?" The audience exchanged looks as
they considered the question. Ranma, for one, did think that there could be
alternate worlds. He had faced so much unusual things in his life that the
boy felt anything was possible. He glanced at Akane, and she seemed to give
him a look that said she agreed with his thoughts. Nabiki appeared to remain
skeptical, but that could have just been her natural face. He returned to the
strange girl.
"Yeah, sure, why not?" he responded, seemingly at ease. He liked to act
gullible and care-free, because it made potential enemies underestimate him.
Erin smiled at Ranma, encouraged.
"Well, taking that to be true, what would you think if I said I was FROM an
alternate dimension?" Ranma felt he wasn't adverse to this, either. If he
believed one, why shouldn't he believe the other? The pig-tailed boy thought
back to the time he and oyaji had used Happosai's magic mirror to go back to
the past. If someone could travel through time, why not worlds?
"Okay, let's say you are from another world..." Ranma conceded, leaning
forward on the table. "Then what are you doin' here?" Even if she were
lying, he bet it would be an interesting story. The girl took a deep breath.
"In my universe," she began, "there is a woman named Rumiko Takahashi. She
is the author of several manga series. One series in particular is titled
'Ranma One Half'." Erin paused here to gauge the others' reactions. They
looked shocked, once again. "As you may have guessed, it is the story of your
lives here in Nerima. Millions of people on my Earth have read of your
adventures. You're quite famous..."
At this point, the girl swept a microphone from out of the air and stood
dramatically. Holding the microphone to her lips, she began her tale:

{flashback!}

I flipped over on my bed so that my eyes faced the ceiling of my room. In my
hand I had the eleventh translated Ranma manga, which was the latest one to be
released in Dallas, Texas: my home.
"Man, what a cliff-hanger!" I exclaimed to myself. I set the book on my
floor, amongst other anime related items, clothes, papers, and shoes. Packing
for my first year in college had stuff scattered all over the place. I
glanced at the clock, which claimed it was 2:48 in the afternoon. "Ack! I'm
gonna be late!" I wailed. "I've gotta go to school to meet Cathy!"
Frantically I ran about, trying to find my tennis racket, some balls, and my
car keys. Although I had known about this tennis match with my best friend on
the school courts for the past two days, somehow I always managed to forget
things like that until the last minute. However, I made it to high school
from which I had recently graduated only fifteen minutes late, which was
pretty good. Cathy was already out on the court, practicing serves.
After a few games in the Texas heat, we retreated to the school's locker
rooms to refresh ourselves. As I changed into some non-sweaty clothes, I
noticed a baseball cap on top of the row of lockers. *Hmm,* I thought,
*better put that in the lost-and-found.* I tried to carefully scale the
lockers, and dubiously reached for the hat. Just as I was about to grab it,
the whole row of lockers started to tilt from the lack of balance, and I was
force to leap off as they came crashing down. Panting, I stared wide-eyed at
the lockers, fallen but still intact. Cathy came running out of a bathroom
stall, and then gasped when she saw what had caused the loud banging noise.
She looked at me worriedly and my brain started working.
"Quick, help me put them back up," I said, going to one end of the row and
gripping it. She followed suit, and we heaved at the lockers until we managed
to lift them back to a standing position. I began pushing them back up
against the wall. From behind my back, I heard Cathy let out another gasp.
"Hey, Erin, look at this," she called, and I turned around. I was surprised
to find a large hole in the floor where the lockers had landed. "It's like
the locker room was built on a sink hole or something," Cathy commented. As
we examined the hole, a rumbling noise began to sound, slowly growing stronger
and stronger. Cathy was finally more agitated than she could stand. "I am
getting out of here," she stated, and ran out of the room. I stared at the
hole in the ground with some crazy kind of fascination, until the rumbling
became a roar.
Then, like a bat out of hell, well, not really like a bat out of hell, but I
can't think of a better way to describe it, an enormous geyser of water came
erupting out of the hole, spraying all over me and the locker room. It lasted
for less than a minute, but it seemed like forever as I slipped and fell to
the floor while being splashed from all sides. I felt a slight tingling
sensation, and then the geyser was gone, leaving me sitting in a couple inches
of water. I remained motionless, shocked. After all, things like this don't
happen to me everyday.
I felt something float passed my leg, and my eyes finally moved to see what
it was. It was a sign, with what I guessed was Chinese characters on it, and
an English translation beneath the fancy writing. I picked it up and read the
English part. It said:

Welcome! This Brand New
 AMERICAN AKANENIICHUAN!
We here at Jusenkyou, Inc. expand every day!
Hope you come see real thing, Jusenkyou Headquarters, someday!
Until then, enjoy this experience!

After rereading the sign several times, I looked down at my body. It wasn't
my body. Cathy timidly stuck her head through the locker room door, and
looked around the room in shock. She let out a low whistle. Then she spotted
me.
"Excuse me," my best friend said, "have you seen a blond girl around? She was
just in here." At this point, I did what any... well, anime character would
do. I fainted.

{end flashback}

Erin paused for a moment to observe her listeners, and Ranma took the
opportunity to interrupt.
"Hey, how come you're American Akaneniichuan worked, but our Japanese
Nanniichuan didn't?! That's not fair!" he cried.
"Life's not fair, Ranma," Nabiki sniffed, and then turned to the gaijin girl.
"But if we don't exist in any way except book form in your world, then how
could there possibly be a real cursed spring?" she asked. Erin nodded.
"That was my first question, as well. But after several tests, I was
convinced my curse was definitely a reality, and not about to go away. I was
extremely confused. From that point on, I researched as much as I could about
anything I thought might help: magic, springs, theories on multiuniverses,
all the Ranma One Half materials I could get my hands on... Heh, I even
joined this mailing list on my computer which was full of people who knew all
about your series. They wrote stories... well, I'm getting off track.
Anyway, I came to the conclusion that in the impossibly complex weavings of
the multiuniverse, where anything and everything has happened, mistakes can
occur. The magical spring that was supposed to pop up in your world, through
amazing chance, had popped up in mine. The problem was that apparently no
cures had popped up as well. Then, one day..."

{flashback #2}

I walked down the sidewalk, examining the sky. It looked like it might rain,
and I certainly didn't want to be out when there was a chance of 'changing' in
front of a public audience. As I watched the clouds through my glasses, a
drop splattered on the lenses, and then more. My suspicions were confirmed.
I ducked quickly into a small shop before any transformation could take place,
hoping I could wait the rain out. In Dallas, during the rainy season, the
showers are often heavy, but they don't last long. I looked through the
window at the rain for a while, and then turned to find out exactly where I
was.
It was the strangest shop I had ever seen. It reminded me of something out
of, well, a Ranma issue. The store was filled with antiques, odd plants,
scary looking figurines, weird sounds and nose-wrinkling aromas. I walked
further towards the back, choosing (wisely, I think,) not to touch anything.
When I finally reached the check-out desk, I noticed an old man standing
behind it. He looked of Asian decent, and was as shrunken as he could be.
The ancient guy had sharp-looking eyes, though, and he held a staff in his
hand firmly. He heard me and turned in my direction, only to let out a loud
gasp. I twisted around to see what could have disturbed him, but nothing of
interest (besides the junk) was behind me. When I returned my gaze back to
the desk, he was gone.
Well, he wasn't gone, he had just moved to stand strait in front of me, and I
looked down at the top of his head. He peered back up at me, staring at me to
the point where I was becoming nervous. Finally, he spoke in a dry whisper.
"You..." he said quietly, "you have a very peculiar aura... It looks
divided..." I nodded, my mouth unable to speak. It was like this little man
was looking into my very soul and saw the curse with his mind. It was
freaking me out. "I have something that will help you," he continued,
waddling back to the counter and retrieving a small item which he held
carefully in both hands. I moved over to him and inspected the object.
It was a small statue, of some unfamiliar animal. My guess would have been a
dragon, ornately carved, with two heads. The shopkeeper motioned for me to
take it, and as the smooth stone met my fingers, shivers ran through my body.
"Concentrate, and tell the da'terandu what you wish were changed. It will
take you to a place where you will find those most suited to aid you in your
journey. Make sure you are holding the statue when your wish is fulfilled, or
else you will never be able to come back. Good luck!"
I locked my eyes on the da... da'tener... whatever-it-was-he-said, and could
almost feel its power. I closed my eyes and thought of my curse, thought of
being rid of it, of being cured. Suddenly I felt a dizziness come over me,
and I sunk to my knees as swirls of color clouded my mind. The last thing I
remember from that time was my hands gripping the stone-animal tightly, and
then all was black.

{End flashback #2}

"And here I am in Nerima," Erin said as she finished her speech. "I woke up
able to speak Japanese, and I wondered around, trying to recognize something
from the mangas I had read, until I, uh, ran into Kasumi." The others looked
at the eldest Tendo daughter, who nodded her confirmation. Erin reached into
her back pocket, and pulled out the small stone da'terandu. "I don't know why
exactly this thing had brought me here," she whispered softly to the dojo
residents, "but I can guess. I think it wants us to take a trip to
'headquarters'."
Silence answered her, as each person within the room was lost in their own
thoughts. After a polite amount of time, Kasumi cleared her throat.
"My, look at the time! I think we should all go to bed," she asserted, as if
that would make everything clear. The rest murmured their assent, and rose
from the table. Kasumi placed a hand on the blond gaijin's arm. "I'm afraid
Ranma and his father are currently using our guest room," the hostess stated,
"so we can't have you sleeping there. Would you mind sleeping in Akane's
room?"
"Hey!" the short-haired girl protested. "Why does she have to share my
room?!" Kasumi frowned.
"Akane-chan, don't be so rude to our guest!" she replied. "Besides, it's
almost like you're sharing a room with yourself!" Akane crossed her arms, and
Erin smiled ruefully.
"Akane-san, Kasumi-san," she addressed them formerly, "I regret being a
burden on you. I am glad you took me into your home as readily as you did.
If I am a problem, I can easily sleep in this living room." That said, Erin
bowed deeply to both of them. Akane rolled her eyes.
"Oh, come on," she said, grabbing the bespectacled girl by the wrist. The
martial artist drug her newfound half-twin up the stairs and into her room.
Akane let go of the girl and she sat on her bed, heaving a large sigh. Her
hands covered her face. Long moments of quiet stretched by. Suddenly, Kasumi
entered with a futon mat and sheets. She quickly made a makeshift bed, and
then said goodnight to the two girls. When the door was shut, Akane removed
her hands and looked at the girl on her floor. "I'm sorry I was so rude like
that down there," she said. "I have a bit of a temper." Erin smiled
brightly.
"Oh, don't even think of it!" she insisted. "I know you better than you know
yourself." Akane looked at Erin, sadly and silently, and nodded.
"Yeah, I guess you do. After all, my entire life's been exposed to your
world on paper. Plus, you have my body. What else of me is there to know?"
she mumbled. Erin frowned worriedly. She stood and sat on the bed next to
Akane, placing a hand on the melancholy girl's shoulder.
"I'm sorry," the blond said. "I didn't mean to upset you. If it's any
consolation, I know how you feel. Like your identity's been stripped from
you... Ranma's now the heir to the dojo, and you're not even the only one who
can be called his fiancee... It's like each of your purposes has been taken
away, and no one bothered to ask you how you felt about it, right?" Akane
hugged her legs to her chest, and lifted her eyes from the floor to look at
Erin. They seemed to shimmer with unshed tears. The young woman nodded
almost imperceptibly and Erin went on.
"And then there's me, who isn't even me half the time. That's not much of an
identity either. But you know what? If you want to get your selfhood back,
you have to fight for it. Fight long and hard. That's why I'm here; that's
why I chose to use the da'te-whatever-it-was. And as for you, fighting is one
of the things you do best!" Erin laughed and gave Akane a quick hug. The
Tendo sniffled and let out her own weak laugh, wiping her eyes with the back
of her hand.
"You're right, Erin," she said. "And thanks. I feel better."
"No problem," the cursed girl responded. Then she yawned loudly and
stretched. "Man, I'm beat. Interdimensional traveling takes a lot out of a
person. Let's hit the hay, shall we?" Akane nodded, and the girls climbed
into their respective beds, Erin pausing to turn off the light. In the dark,
a voice sounded.
	"Akane?" it prompted.
	"Yeah?"
	"I'll help you fight."

END of Chapter One

Author's notes: Whew! This is the longest single chapter I've ever written.
Two flashbacks and everything! :) I had a LOT of fun writing it. I hope you
find it humourous and heart-warming. I feel my job as a fanfic writer is to
entertain, so please tell me if I am making the cut or not! I already have
the plot, etc. for Chapter Two in my head and somewhat on paper, so hopefully
I'll get it out soon? Thanks for reading! Ciao for now.

-- Erin, Unfortunate Victim of Spring of Drowned Akane (for the duration of
this story, at least!)
