If you had a brilliant idea for a story, one that would knock the
socks
off people, but one that you knew would get bad press from a few
overzealous, overauthoritative people, would you write it? Would you
release it, knowing that it would cause you a lot of unnecessary
grief?
Incidentally...yes, I would. However, if I had this great idea, but
found while doing it that it couldn't work without warping the
characters without any reason, no I wouldn't. Hence I actually have an
entire fanfic written that will never see the light of day, because I
don't feel the characterisation is up to snuff.
Anyone can write, but writing WELL is difficult. As long as your prose
are strong and you follow the rules of good story-telling, you can get
away with the screwiest plots and characterizations; look at Lawson for
a perfect example.
<sigh> Mark...I've defended you, on this group and in private. I've
taken a lot of goddamn grief for defending you. This kind of thing
makes me honestly wonder why I bother. You were doing well for awhile.
You were writing C&C that, while negative, was perfectly valid (if not
necessarily gospel), and nothing anyone on this group has a right to
complain about. Keep with that. Stop with the asinine attacks on
Richard. I will be the last person to say I agree with all his
characterisations, and we've locked horns pretty spectacularly on it in
the past. But there is no call, and you have no right, to insule him
this way. If you have a beef with him or his writing, take it up with
HIM, privately. He's a reasonable guy, and if you actually produce some
evidence to back your assertions, he'll listen. But quit with the
attacks. They don't belong here, they're unecessary, and they're just
plain rude.
This will be my last public note on the matter. I actually am
interested in not overflowing the group with SPAM (hence my general lack
of public replies), no matter how much half the group seems eager to
assume the worst about anything I do.
