' ' are thoughts.
Most of the characters in this series are from Ranma 1/2, but the
personalities of many have been slightly altered to fit within the roles
established by the fusion with Futaba-kun Change. The following details
are significant at this time:
1. Ranma lives at the Saotome home with both parents.
2. None of the characters have Jusenkyou curses.
3. There is no arranged marriage between Ranma and Akane, for
reasons that will soon become obvious.

Ranma-kun Change, Volume 1
Part 1: Ranma-kun Changes
The rain clouds that had hung above Fuurinkan High all morning were
just beginning to dissipate, revealing the Sun's warm glow. The
student's took little notice of it, however, since it was still the
middle of
the last class before lunch. In room 1-F, Ranma sat in his seat, paying
more attention to the girl in front of him than to the teacher.
Even though he had only been at Fuurinkan High for a few weeks, the
bulk of the last several years of his life having been spent wandering
about the far corners of the globe with his father in an attempt to hone
his martial arts skills, he was absolutely sure of one thing: he liked
Akane Tendou. Not that he'd ever admit it to anyone, mind you, but she
was wonderful. So beautiful, so graceful, so sweet... except when a boy
approached her. At best, she was all business when that happened. At
worst... well, let's just say that no man was safe around Akane at her
worst. He just didn't get it. Besides, with half of the boys at
Fuurinkan
High chasing after her, he didn't have a chance. Well, a man could
dream...
He thought back to their first meeting. He had arrived for his first day
of
class at Fuurinkan High to see Akane fighting her way through a small
crowd of boys. Of course, it is always a gentleman's duty to help a lady
in distress, so he joined the fight, taking out several of her
opponents.
He thought that she would be grateful.
On the surface, it had appeared that he had been wrong. She had yelled
at him for interfering, then stomped off angrily.
However, later that day she had seemed to have had a change of heart.
Even though she hadn't said it with words, she had given him a look
that told him that she really had been glad that he had stood up for
her.
Still, any time that he had tried to approach her since then, she had
given
him the brush-off.
A chalkboard eraser sailed through the air and whacked Ranma upside
the head, shaking him out of his daydream. He looked up at Miss
Hinako, who seemed to be quite angry at him.
"Saotome! Ranma Saotome! What are you daydreaming about? Pay
attention to the lesson, not the girls! The lesson!"
"Yes, Miss Hinako," he replied in a small voice. The rest of the class
burst out laughing.
'Akane...she laughed at me,' Ranma thought.
"Kiin Koon Kaan Koon!" The school bell rang, dismissing the students
for lunch. Hiroshi, three seats over, immediately got up and approached
Ranma. "Raanmaaa!" he called.
"What d'ya want?"
Hiroshi grabbed Ranma and tried to place him in a tight headlock. "Who
were ya looking at in class anyway?"
"Whaddya mean 'who'?" Ranma forced his way out of Hiroshi's hold
and dropped into a simple defensive stance.
"Don't play dumb with me, Ranma. It's written all over your face!"
"You think I'm gonna tell *you*?"
Hiroshi grabbed for Ranma's arm, planning to twist him into another
hold.. "It was that girl, Akane, wasn't it? She's gotta be the most
popular
girl in school. Who else could it be?"
"Oww!... Why the hell would I want to do that?! You know how she is
around guys! There's no way I could--"
"Ooooh, so you *do* have a crush on her. Figures."
"Think again!" Ranma's fist flew out to punch Hiroshi directly between
the eyes. Hiroshi retaliated by throwing a punch at Ranma. This quickly
degenerated into a low-level fight. Ranma could have finished Hiroshi
quickly, but he preferred to win by surrender, not knockout. After a few
moments, both collapsed in a heap at the feet of Akane, who had been
standing nearby, watching them.
"Kyaaa!" Akane quickly pushed down her skirt. "How dare you look up
my skirt, you pervert!" She waved her fist at Ranma.
"Hey, I, uh...that is...I didn't..." Ranma replied in a small voice.
Then,
regaining his composure, he said, "H-Hey! It's not like I was *trying*
to look up your skirt or nothing!"
"But you still did it, didn't you!?" Akane reached up to slap Ranma.
Nabiki, who had been standing in the doorway all this time, decided to
speak up. "All right, break it up, you guys!"
"Nabiki-chan!" Akane reprimanded.
"Now, Saotome," Nabiki began. "You wouldn't want anybody to...find
out about this little incident, would you?"
Ranma gulped. From what he had heard, Nabiki was the school's top
expert on nonviolent extortion. If Nabiki wanted something, she got it.
Kunou appeared out of nowhere. "Such an accident was unavoidable, as
one of my standing can clearly see," he said.
"What?!" Nabiki demanded.
"Our comrade Saotome has just given Hiroshi a splendid demonstration
of his martial arts talent! That he was in a position to see under the
lady
Akane's skirt was merely a coincidence and hence unavoidable!"
"Kunou! Ya know, that actually made sense," Ranma said.
"Yes, but he still did it, Kunou-chan. That he did, in fact, look up her
skirt is undeniable. If word of that were to spread..." She let the
threat hang.
Kunou folded his arms. "Would you truly stoop to spreading such base
rumors about a man?"
"How can you say that?!"
"That's enough, Nabiki!" Akane snapped.
Looking at Ranma, Akane spotted a rip in the crotch of his pants,
probably caused when he ht the floor. "Ewww!"
"Danm, My pants are torn!" Ranma observed. "That's the second pair
this week!"
Kunou stepped in again. "There, that makes you even, now doesn't it?"
Turning to Ranma, he said, "Do not fear embarrassment over your
damaged uniform, Ranma. A stapler should suffice to repair it until you
can get home." Then, he turned to Akane. "Allow me to recompense
you by allowing you to date with me!"
Kunou tried to glomp Akane, but she shoved him into the wall before he
had a chance to succeed.
"Men!" Akane turned to leave.
Nabiki followed Akane. "What's the problem? I was just about to rake
in some cash!"
"It's all right! Forget it!" Akane replied.
"I can't! I'd be a fool not to get a profit off of a setup like that!!
How
could I, Nabiki Tendou, let an opportunity to make money just slip
through my fingers!? I just can't stand it! Betrayed by my own flesh and
blood!
"But what's with you, anyway? Are you mad because of how much he
might've seen under your skirt? If you are, I can make sure everybody
knows what a pervert he is."
"Well..." Akane hesitated. Should she tell her sister or not?
"What's this all about?"
Akane dragged Nabiki into the girls' toilet, then whispered something
into her ear.
"A talisman?" Nabiki was shocked. Akane believed in magic? Then
again, one of Nabiki's major sources of income was selling "foolproof"
methods to trap Akane to the boys who had crushes on her, some of
which *did* involve the use of "magic". If they could believe in it,
then
why not Akane?
"Mmm hmm. Read this." Akane shoved a book in Nabiki's face.
Nabiki took the book and began reading. "'For one week, keep the name
tag of the boy you love fastened to your underwear where it won't be
seen, and your feelings for him will be reciprocated.'
"What a load of bull! Have you already tried doing something like this,
Sis? If it could really make someone fall in love with you, then no one
would have problems! Anyway, if you really want to get this mystery
boy interested in you, you need to show some interest in him. Do you
really think he'll come to you if you push him away the same as you do
every other boy who approaches you?"
"I guess so..." Akane said.
"Stop this! You're just wasting your time."
'There was only one more day to go, too...' Akane thought dismally.
'Could he have seen the name tag? He only got a glimpse, so he
probably couldn't even make out the characters. But if Ranma-kun of all
people saw it!' She thought of the tag again. Ranma would definitely be
her last choice to see the tag pinned to her panties. After all, it was
his
name written on it.
" Anyway, let's get going. I still have some stuff to do before noon
recess is over," Nabiki prompted, impatiently.
"Okay, Okay!"
***
Ranma sat by himself under a tree, entirely absorbed in his own
thoughts, such as they were. 'Once again I've made myself look like a
total idiot in front of Akane! I'll never live this one down...'
"Hey Ranma! What are you doing? Come over here!" Hiroshi called
from the other end of the field.
"What the heck's going on?" Ranma asked.
"All right!" Hiroshi exclaimed. He and Daisuke were fighting over what
appeared to be a number of photographs.
"Eh? What's this?" Ranma asked.
"Are you blind? It's the latest set of prints of Akane Tendou that we
got
from Nabiki!?" Hiroshi explained.
"Yeah. Gorgeous, isn't she?" Daisuke commented.
"Whatcha doing with photos of her for, anyway?" Much as Ranma
wanted to admit that he admired Akane as much as the rest of the guys,
he remembered his father's words. He must never admit to having
feelings for any girl, or his father would be quite angry.
"I wonder who she likes," said Hiroshi dreamily.
"Whoever it is, it can't be one of us," quipped Daisuke.
"I don't believe you guys! Gimme those!" Angrily, Ranma snatched the
photographs out of their hands before either could blink.
"Hey, waitaminit!" Daisuke grabbed at Ranma, but he was too late to
catch him.
***
Ranma sat in a stall in the boy's toilet, holding the photos of Akane in
front of him. He knew that Akane wouldn't like to have them circulating
around for everyone to see. Maybe he should just destroy them.
His curiosity got the better of him. 'Maybe I'll just take one little
peek,'
he thought.
He flipped through the photos. The first few were plain enough,
showing Akane doing such everyday things as eating lunch and playing
softball in Gym class.
'She is kinda cute...' Ranma admitted.
He continued on. There were a couple of shots of Akane in a gi,
practicing her martial arts forms. Now *this* was interesting. *This*
was beauty in action.
Ranma's heart began to beat faster: "Doki doki".
The last picture was even better. It had been stacked backwards, so
Ranma only saw the back of it at first. His attention was drawn to the
2500-yen price tag that Nabiki had put on the back. What could be in
the picture that made it worth 2500 yen? He turned it over and found
out.
The picture showed Akane coming out of the bath, wearing nothing
more than a towel loosely wrapped about her. It was revealing, but no
more so than a skimpy two-piece bathing suit would be.
Ranma's conscience immediately told him that he should stop looking at
the picture, out of respect for Akane, but his curiosity was stronger.
She was... so beautiful. She was slender, but not skinny, lean muscle
filling in the places where fat had been. Not that she was muscle-bound,
mind you. On the contrary, she was quite curvy and well-stacked. What
muscle she had seemed to convey a sense of power and independence,
things that were not traditional in Japanese women, but ranked high on
Ranma's scale of values.
'Gee, all that beauty and strength. No wonder everybody's going gaga
over her.'
"Doki doki doki doki" Ranma began to feel dizzy.
"Wha--?"
"doki-doki-doki-doki-dokundokundokundokundokun"
'I--I feel so hot! It...hurts!!' He clutched his chest in pain.
Gasping, he collapsed onto the floor with a dull thud.
***
Lunch had ended, and Miss Hinako was taking afternoon roll call.
"Samata!"
"Present!"
"Saotome!"
Silence.
"Is Saotome-kun here?"
More silence.
Hinako grew impatient. "Is he absent today?"
"He was here at lunch," Hiroshi volunteered.
Everyone who sat near Hiroshi immediately scooted their desks at least
a meter farther away from him. Once Hinako had a target, there was no
stopping her.
Their suspicions were confirmed when Hinako pulled out a fifty-yen
coin and pointed it at Hiroshi. "You guys always hang out together! Do
you know where he is?"
Hiroshi steeled himself. If Hinako didn't believe him... "It is
regrettable,
but even if I did know, honor prevents me from answering. No true
martial artist would ever betray a comrade. However, I believe that
wherever Ranma Saotome is, he is off bettering himself somehow.
Maybe you should ask the 'Blue Thunder'."
Hinako lowered the coin, much to the relief of her students. "Very well,
then. Tendou?"
"Present!" Akane replied. 'I wonder what's wrong,' she thought. 'Did he
get his pants fixed okay?' Suddenly remembering something, Akane
grabbed a book from her bag and flipped through it.
'Aha!' she thought. 'This'll be perfect!'
***
A short while later, in the boy's toilet, Ranma was just regaining
consciousness. The first thing that he was aware of was a splitting
headache. "Oooooh! Did I pass out? I wonder what time it is..."
He staggered dizzily to his feet and looked in the mirror. What he saw
didn't compute.
"Huh? That face... is... me?"
The face that Ranma saw in the mirror was softer and finer than his
own, and his eyes were a brighter shade of blue than he remembered. To
add to his confusion, his hair now seemed to be bright red instead of
its
usual black color.
He leaned forward to get a better look at this strange face. In doing
so,
his chest pressed against the edge of the sink, producing a most
unfamiliar squishy sensation. He checked inside his shirt, but his hands
only confirmed what he had suspected.
"But that's impossible!" he gasped. In a blur of motion Ranma dropped
his pants and tore open his shirt.
"How could this...?"
In the mirror he saw that a very strange transformation had come over
him. In fact, he wasn't a he any more.
"Is it really true? This... can't be! What's happening...?" His (her?)
mind
began to shut down from overload.
***
Classes had finally ended, and Kunou and company decided to engage in
an exhaustive search for the missing Ranma.
"Daisuke, did you find anything?" Kunou asked.
"No sign of Ranma anywhere."
"I tried to cover for him back in class, but I'm still kinda worried
about
him." Hiroshi said. "Anyway, here's the men's room."
Daisuke pushed open the door to the men's room. "Hey Saotome!
You in here? If you are, say something!"
Ranma was still standing in front of the mirror, simultaneously
transfixed by her own reflection and completely confused out of her
mind trying to figure out why she was the way that she was.
"Ahhh... um..." she gasped when she realized that she wasn't alone.
Daisuke, upon seeing that Ranma was almost completely nude,
developed an explosive nosebleed and passed out on the floor.
"Ooooooh! A half-naked girl!!!" Hiroshi drooled. He leapt at Ranma,
but her martial artist reflexes took over instantly, despite the changes
in
strength and balance brought on by her recent transformation. She
grabbed him and threw him to the floor before he could react. After all,
girl or not, Ranma was still the heir to the Saotome School of Anything-
Goes Martial Arts.
"Hey you!" Kunou shouted. He tried to grab Ranma before she
could escape.
"Kyaaaaa!" Ranma shrieked. 'If Kunou caches me, I'm in for it!' she
thought. Faced with having to choose between facing Kunou, who
would likely grab her and start one of his long, bad-poetry-filled
speeches about romance, and leaping through the closed window and
running, half-naked, to freedom, she made her choice.
Bits of broken glass went flying everywhere as she plunged through the
windowpane. She landed on her feet and began running for her life.
"I-I don't understand what's happening anymore!" she thought,
panicked. Her thoughts were no longer those of a rational person, but of
one who had just had her world collapse around her with no explainable
cause. Why was she a girl?
"Wait!" Kunou shouted after her.
Ranma's flight began to attract the attention of several students. Maybe
it was because Kunou was yelling for her to stop, but more likely it was
because she wasn't wearing any pants.
"Eh?"
"Whoa!"
"H-hey!
"Kyaaa!"
"How awful!"
Kunou, realizing by now that all the shouting in the world was not going
to stop Ranma, went to assist his fallen companions. He shook Hiroshi
back to consciousness. "Did you not see that?" he asked.
"Yeah! What a babe!" Hiroshi drooled.
Kunou whacked Hiroshi upside the head with the flat side of his
bokutou. "Not that, you simpleton! I was referring to the way in which
she threw you! The speed of her motion! The split-second timing! And
the spring as she ever-so-gracefully leapt through that window! Surely
that pigtailed beauty is an angel sent to us by the gods themselves! We
must form a women's division and entice her to join our club!"
"Man, Kunou, you've really flipped this time!" Hiroshi commented.
***
Akane had left her classroom in search of Ranma. She approached
Nabiki's classroom. At that moment, Nabiki happened to be standing in
the doorway. "Hey, Sis! Whatcha doing?" she asked as Akane passed
by.
Akane kept going. "Sorry, I'll be back in a little bit!"
'Ranma...Where could he have gone to?' she thought. She walked
around a bend in the corridor, and discovered Kunou and company,
scheming.
"All right! We're going to find her for certain, and then we're going to
*make* her join!" Kunou raised his bokutou for dramatic effect.
Hiroshi held up Ranma's dropped pants. "That's fine, but what was she
doing in the men's room wearing half a boy's uniform, anyway? Doesn't
that seem kinda weird?"
"Never mind that!" Kunou snapped. "Can you not see that it is destined
that the pigtailed angel join our club? Why else would we have stumbled
across her by such pure serendipity as that, if not by fate? We shall
search this school from top to bottom! Daisuke, you take the third floor
and the roof! Hiroshi, you take the first and second floors while I
search
outside. If any of you find Saotome, tell him to join me. Let's go!"
"Aye aye!" Daisuke saluted.
The three took off in separate directions, leaving behind a bewildered
Akane.
'What was *that* all about?' Akane wondered. She spied the pair of
pants lying in the middle of the corridor where Hiroshi had dropped
them. She picked them up and examined them.
'You can see how they've been stapled together... These are Ranma's!'
she realized. 'But what are they doing here?'
***
Outside, the schoolyard was abuzz with talk about Ranma's strange
flight.
"Huh? Really? You're kidding!" a boy asked.
"No, really! It happened!" another boy confirmed. "I saw it happen with
my own eyes!"
"Hmmm. Maybe you need new glasses, Hikaru," his girlfriend
suggested.
"Hey! What's happening here?" another student asked.
"I hear there's a girl running around the school butt-naked!" the first
boy
explained.
"No, she was wearing an unbuttoned blouse of some sort," another
student corrected.
"Where!? Where was she!?" a boy asked.
"Right over there," a girl pointed.
The students tromped off to see just what was going on.
Meanwhile, Ranma was hiding in the bushes. After the other students
passed, she climbed in through an open ground-level window.
'I think I'll be safe if I hide in the medical clinic for a while,' she
thought.
Luckily for her, the clinic was empty of people.
She climbed into the clinic's bed and hid under the covers. 'How could
my body have changed like this? It just doesn't make sense at all...'
she
thought in despair. How could she go home like this? Nobody would
recognize her. Finally, she decided to do what a Saotome always did in
the face of such a hopeless situation. She fell asleep.
***
Much later, Kunou and Hiroshi had reformed outside the clinic.
"Well, this is the only place in the school that we have yet to search,"
Kunou said as they entered the clinic. "Hello? Is anybody in here?" he
called.
Meanwhile, Akane was still wandering the halls in search of Ranma,
although she wouldn't admit it to anyone who asked.
'Where could Ranma have gone without his pants?' she thought.
She saw Kunou and Hiroshi exit the clinic and stroll off.
"Good, we have found Saotome. Now, let us continue our search for
the pigtailed angel!" Kunou said.
Akane wondered what Kunou meant. Hadn't he been talking about a
"pigtailed angel' earlier? Still, he *had* just said that Ranma was in
the clinic. She looked into the clinic and found Ranma sleeping soundly
in the bed. Smiling, she left his pants lying next to him and quietly
tiptoed away.
***
Much later...
"Yeow!" Ranma awoke with a start. Then, he realized where he was.
"Huh? Guess I fell asleep."
He checked under the covers. "Huh? I've changed back into a guy! Was
it just a dream...? I...remember it so clearly. Besides, I'm not wearing
any pants and... Hm?"
He spied his pants lying beside him. He picked them up and examined
them. "Hey, these are mine..."
***
Later that night, Ranma sat on his bed, examining his formerly-torn
pants.
'I wonder who fixed these for me while I was sleeping. Akane, maybe?
Nah, she's probably still mad at me for earlier, so who was it?
'But anyway, what happened back there? If I remember right, I was
looking at those shots of Akane I got from the guys...'
He picked up the photos and looked at them again.
'And then I was thinking about the one with her in the bath when...
"YAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!"
Nodoka heard Ranma's scream and ran to his bedroom. "Ranma, what's
wrong? I heard you scream!"
She pushed open the door and found Ranma crouched on the floor,
panting and *very* female.
"Oh my! Ranma, is that you?"
"Mom? Wha-- What's happening...?"
Nodoka turned and called down the stairs. "Dear! Ranma has grown
up!"
"Huh?" Why wasn't his mother confused? After all, it isn't every day
that
your son turns into a woman... is it?
***
A moment later, Ranma, male once again, and his entire family were
assembled in the livingroom. Of course, that wasn't saying much,
considering that Ranma was an only child.
Genma laughed. "Wahahahahah! This is a day to celebrate! Is it true?
Has our son finally come of age? I was hoping it would be soon! That's
why I was in such a hurry to get back form our training journey last
month. Dear, is there any more red beans and rice left, or did I eat it
all?
"You ate it all, dear," Nodoka replied.
"Darnit! Well, then make some more!"
"But Pop! What's going on?" Ranma asked. "I don't understand it!
How the hell could something like this happen?"
"What? You mean that you don't understand *yet*!? Now that you've
matured, your body will change into the opposite sex whenever you
become tense or excited. It's a genetic trait in our family!"
"G... Genetic trait!?!"
"Your mother and I, and now you, we all change in this way! You've
lived with us all your life and you haven't noticed?! A martial artist
is
supposed to be observant! How can you be observant if you can't even
notice a simple thing like that, pray tell?!"
"Well, I uh..."
"Now, boy, what I have to say to you may come as a bit of a shock, but
I have to tell you that...
Nodoka smiled.
"...As a matter of fact, -I- was the one who gave birth to you!"
This was way too much for Ranma to handle. The full impact of what
his father said began to sink in. It all made sense in a twisted sort of
way. It explained why they had kept moving from place to place during
their training trip: that way he wouldn't form any lasting relationships
with anyone that might cause trouble later. It also explained why his
father had kept insisting that he never reveal any feelings that he
might
have about a girl to anyone, if he was to become one himself.
If what his father said was true, he was doomed from birth to turn into
a
woman *any* time that he became excited. He tried briefly to imagine
what it would be like. He couldn't.
Then, he fainted.
