Because we're a bit too afraid that we might cause a calamity. We might
hurt someone's feelings. It's not easy critizing someone for anything: grammar,
character interpretation, plot, etc.

i agree that picking apart grammar, etc, in a fic risks hurting the author's feelings.
if anybody cares *wink* this has been my editing policy, both professionally and
privately: start by telling the author what you liked (what worked well, etc.) with
the same kind of detail & examples you'd use with the things you didn't like or felt
needed work or correction. that done, tell them what you didn't like, etc. it makes
your c&c more balanced and makes it go down better (usually, though not always,
unfortunately).
what's everyone else's view of that policy? i'd love to hear it. assuming this gets
through. heh. maybe i should add something inflamatory? hmmm...uhhh...sailor mars
