As much as I like searching the web for new authors and new fanfiction web
pages, I often avoid going to pages in Geocities.  Why?  Because my

computer

is ancient, and the pop-up advertisements at geocities slow my processor
down signigicantly.  I don't have time to fight with a second browser

window

opening when it already takes me three times as long as it should to get to
a good story.

A good way to avoid this is to either disable scripts on your browser, or
have it ask you if you want to run them.  There aren't many pages out there
that use scripts for anything useful, so it's not like you're loosing a lot
of functionality.
