There has been a lot of speculation on this issue. There really isn't an
answer, Takahashi probably never really considered this, it isn't important
to the plot.

We see a sign on the front door (in the manga) that says "to defeat the
owner in savage combat please use rear enterance." This could refer just to
chalanges, but who knows? We know the Dojo is sometimes rented out as a
meeting hall (the part where Ryoga has a face painted on his chest showed
that) so there is some money coming in that way. There may be classes going
on that just aren't shown. Soun mentions (in "like water for Ranma") that
he has no regular source of income, so they probably just get money from
lots of little things and Nabiki and Kasumi probably are masters at
stretching a buck.

Akane and Ranma make so much of a mess. Not to mention the guest they have.
I know that Nabiki is incharge of the money in the house hold but does she
have a job? or does she live off the money people owe her?

if the dojo is a teaching school, why dont we see any classes?
im sure if it was, there would be some sign of classes there or am i just
mistaken?
