There's a scene in the anime (from Ryouga's flashback of his attempts to 
find the vacant lot where he was to fight Ranma) that shows him having 
no clue where he is and the Eiffel Tower in the background....  And, of 

that was the tokyo tower unless i'm mistaken...

I doubt it.  But, without that scene, I would have doubted his ability 
to cross oceans without knowing it, and agreed with the person saying 
it's just a stupid fanfic legend.

In his return after his first appearence he mentions that it was summer in
Okinawa.. not quite an ocean... just an expanse of it.. he is shown coming
out of the surf (this is anime so we can ignore the fact that the water
should be cold, and therefore he should be a pig... expecially since he
only develops the curse in the next ep)
