DJ is a Mary Sue character, but if you compare him to Gryphon's
avatars in UF, Hopelessly Lost, Warrior's Legacy or Gods Willing,
he's not exactly an SI character. He shares some of the author's
opinions, interests and sense of humor, but so do a lot of other
fanfic characters. (By the definition I cite, NXE didn't qualify as
a Mary Sue story until DJ became Asuka's love interest.)
Some, but not all, Mary Sue stories are SI stories, and vice versa.
For example: BGZone is both a Mary Sue and an SI; Gods Willing (based
on what little that's been written of it) is SI but not Mary Sue;
Ranma 1/2 Naisen is Mary Sue but not SI.
