For this comment, I'd like to point out some odd things about Japan.
Age of consent is 12.
It is illegal to offer money for sex if the person you proposition for
sex is under 18. (Law went into effect late 1997 or early '98)
Minimum marriage age is 18. (Law went into effect mid '90s)
So in 1992 a twelve-year-old could legal accept money for sex and get
married.
For the Evangelion series, if sex laws don't change by 2015, and given
the fact that half the worlds population is dead- it is quite legal and
probably socially acceptible and maybe even incouraged.
BTW: The law about prostitution came about because a survey done between
July and September of '97 found 17% of the senior junior-high-school
(14-15 years-old) girls found nothing wrong with selling their body for
sex.
Japan's culture still has many aspects that come from their
pre-Americanized government that many of us will find rather odd. Their
views of sex has had me scratch my head several times before, especially
considering prostitution.
