Tales of Macross City # 1

Author's notes: This is a megafusion of many anime characters, where I just
borrow them and plop them all into one city and make some of them
superheroes. Don't be surprised if there are any similarities in the style
that the story is written and the plot with that of Astro city. This is
because this is intended to be a work that pays tribute to both anime and
the greatest writer in the universe! To Kurt Busiek, whose stories have
made my friends and me both laugh and cry, philosophize and criticize. And
most of all, for rekindling my love in comic books. This is for you Kurt, o
master of prose!

Disclaimer: All characters and names belong to their respective companies
and corporations. Please don't sue me, as doing so will only be waste of
both time and money, since I have a minimum of both!

A Lesson Learned the Hard Way
	By

Hi there, how you doing? Oh? A tourist? First time in Macross city? Well,
welcome then! This is one of the finest places to visit in the world! It's
probably the only city in the world which has pretty much an equal number
of Asians and Americans living in it!

Oh, how rude of me, let me introduce myself, I'm Yusaku Godai, I live at
Maison Ikkoku, it's in the Little Tokyo area of the city. I study at the
Macross University.

A girlfriend?

 Me?

..

Well.

 I got

uh.

 Prospects..

Right! Prospects

Like the manager from my apartment house.

Hey! Stop looking at me like that! I really like her! In fact, I love her!

I fell in love with her the first time I saw her, when I moved here from
Tokyo for college, she's older than me though, and she's a widow and still
in love with her dead husband.

Heck it's been years now and I'm still in love with her! I just never had
the nerve to do anything about it.

Her name is Kyoko Otonashi, and she's really very nice and very sweet and
very cute and very generous and very..

AHEM!

Enough about me! Lets talk about the city!

What's particularly great about this city are the heroes!

Oh? Did I forget to mention the Super-heroes? Well, any person who reads
the news should know that both Tokyo and Macross City have the largest
number of heroes, with Astro city and New York ranking close seconds. I
mean, Tokyo has the Sailor Senshi and Tuxedo Mask, but Macross has the Big
"S," Saiyanman, perhaps the most famous hero on earth, although from what I
hear, he's not even FROM earth.

Who else is in Macross? Hmm. Well, there's Gowcaizer, that new rookie
hero, he's got a very cool looking armor!

Then there's the Guyver, if you saw the news last night.

Oh and there's Terry Bogard, the Southtown hero, although the guy always
says he isn't a hero He's a pretty nice guy, heck he's always in the
girlie magazines along with his girlfriend Sulia. He's probably the only
superhero without a fancy name and costume, although if you think about it,
that red jacket, cap and sneakers of his are pretty distinctive and pretty
much his "costume" already.

Oops! I have to go, I've got a class and I'm late! Nice talking to you!

					-*-

Oh, hi, fancy meeting you again. You know what? That day I met you turned
out to be pretty significant to me. Well, an incident that day has made me
realize some things.

You remember how I had to run off to class because I was late?

Well, I never made it to that class.

I took a shortcut through Hunter Park and I didn't notice all the police
cars. I was running as fast as I could by Lake Gloval to try and make it
to my class on time before I was cut off by this odd high-pitched sound.

I turned around to look at what had made that sound.

What I saw was the famous Southtown Hero, Terry Bogard, duking it out along
with Gowcaizer, against this young gray haired supervillain, who was
clothed in a yellow and white armor. I later found out that the guy was
Laocorn, one of Terry Bogard's old enemies. He had managed to get a piece
of the armor of Mars which made him pretty strong.

Although, by rights, Bogard should be able to handle Laocorn alone, both
Bogard and Gowcaizer together were barely holding their own now, which was
pretty weird.

It seemed that Laocorn had somehow pieced together all the six parts of the
armor of Mars, which he was now wearing and gave him unbelievable power,
like that of a god, which he was using to tear the city apart.

His only mistake, of course, was to try and tear up Macross city, which had
enough heroes to kick his butt and blow him to kingdom come.

Or so I thought.

How wrong I was.

Not only was he holding his own against the two heroes, but he was actually
beating them.

Energy was swirling all around Laocorn, and this energy was taking all the
attacks that Terry and Gowcaizer were throwing at him. Gowcaizer took a
full forceblast in the chest, just as he was attempting to attack. He soon
made a pretty large crater on the sidewalk.

Terry Bogard, taking advantage of the momentary distraction that the
younger hero presented, quickly executed this attack that had his fist
covered in energy. It almost hit Laocorn too, except that one of the energy
tendrils swirling around the villain became a hand that grabbed Bogard,
halting the attack, and setting him up for a very painful looking barrage
of punches by the other energy tendrils.

After that, he just threw Terry away, toward me. He landed with a heavy
thud at my feet.

I was pretty shocked at the event that was unfolding before my eyes, in
fact, I don't think that the realization that I was in mortal danger hit me
until after everything was all over. Because of that, I just looked at him,
as Terry Bogard tried to get up. He was clutching his abdomen, I had heard
rumors that he was having stomach problems after the fight with Wolfgang
Krauser.

It was then that his girlfriend, a pretty blue-haired girl with short hair
and bright, wide open eyes, ran to his side and helped him up, despite his
protests that she "get the hell out of here!"

Well, this Sulia was one brave girl, and she refused and said that she was
staying right here to help him! She also said that she was the key to
defeating Laocorn, who turned out to be her twin brother! Personally, I
don't see the resemblance.

It was at this moment that Laocorn, who had fended off several more attacks
by Gowcaizer and some brave policemen, turned his attention back to Terry
and, after noticing Sulia's presence, shot off another energy blast towards
us!

This was the moment that my brain kicked into gear and I managed to blurt
out: "Behind you!"

Terry took a quick glance behind him, and grabbed both Sulia and me into a
hug in an attempt to shield us, taking the full brunt of the blast on his
back.

I saw Terry grunt in pain and blood start to seep from his mouth, before he
collapsed again. Sulia was horrified, and her wide eyes were even wider
now. I wasn't sure what I looked look, but I knew that I was no pretty
sight myself.

Laocorn was laughing at this and was saying something to his sister: "Oh,
I'm sorry, did I hurt you lover boy sis? HAHAHAHAHA!"

At this, Sulia looked at Laocorn with eyes full of loathing, loathing and.
Sorrow?

For whom I wondered? For her wounded lover? Or for her lost and misguided
brother?

One thing was for sure, I also saw determination in those eyes, as if she
was planning something and was intent on doing it.

Laocorn had, by this time, chosen to ignore his sister and Terry Bogard,
and consequently me too, much to my relief!

But Laocorn was now wreaking havoc with the police force and the NERV
troops that had responded to this crisis.

Now NERV is the world agency that is charged with dealing with extra-normal
and or superhuman threats, wherever they may occur in the world. Despite
all the special training that these NERV troops had in dealing with such
threats, they still were unable to do much about Laocorn, to say that both
the police and those special troops were being decimated would be an
understatement.

Gowcaizer, who had recovered from his beating, quickly tried to intervene
to save some lives, but his energy attacks were no match for that of
Laocorn's. However, he did buy the police and NERV people time to get to
safety. Not only time for them but also, I'm sorry to say, time for Sulia
to put her plan into motion.

Terry was already getting up, although it required effort. Sulia went to
him, and whispered something to him, which caused Terry to get angry and
shout: "No! Sulia, what about my promise? I said I would protect you and I
will!"

Sulia just looked at him with eyes full of emotion, silent and begging.

Terry looked adamant though, whatever it was Sulia wanted to do would get
no support from the Hungry Wolf.

Then all thoughts of the argument dissipated as Laocorn once more blasted
Gowcaizer away and turned his attention to us. He had a very smug look on
his face, confident of victory.

Terry saw this and immediately performed his power wave technique, which
destroyed everything in its path, everything except its intended target.

Whilst Terry was doing this Sulia took a quick look around, then turned to
me and asked: "Do you have anything sharp on you? Quickly!"

Images of my Swiss army knife which had been a gift from Sakamoto, my best
friend, passed through my mind. The item in question was in my pocket.

"Yes, I've got a Swiss army knife in my."

"Good! Give it to me!" Interrupted Sulia.

I was kind of flustered but I gave it to her anyway.

She hurriedly took out the blade of the knife and looked at the sharp edge
for a few moments, as if contemplating what she was about to do. But her
reverie was interrupted as Terry was blasted past her, and collided with
me, knocking me off my feet.

The next thing I knew, both me and Terry were on the ground, and we were
looking to be on the receiving end of a very lethal and final looking
energy blast which was coalescing around Laocorn's left palm and was aimed
at us.

The supervillain just said one word to us, or if you want to be exact about
it, to Terry:

"Good-bye."

Then, out of the blue, Laocorn's left arm, or to be more precise, the left
arm of his armor seemed to fade in power, just as it received a final
energy blast from Gowcaizer, who made a last-ditch effort to save his
comrade, and then fell to the ground, exhausted.

The left arm exploded from the impact of Gowcaizer's energy blast, causing
Laocorn's own energy blast to go wide, missing us entirely, much to my
relief.

But Terry was not relieved, instead, he seemed to know why the left arm was
weakened, he looked at Sulia and was shouting at her: "NOOOO!!!!!!"

It was then that I looked at her, at Sulia.

Her left arm was bleeding, at the same spot where Laocorn's own arm had
been weakened. The twins were now both clutching the same part of their
left arm, except that Sulia was also holding on to MY Swiss army knife,
whose blade was bloody.

She stabbed herself!

Somehow, through some sort of weird psychic link or something, what you
did to Sulia somehow also affected her twin brother Laocorn!

Laocorn was screaming now, he was ticked, that was for sure!

Terry was pretty upset himself, and he managed to get up and run towards
Sulia.

Sulia, seeing Terry run towards her, raised the knife high into the air
with her arms, with the sharp edge, the lethal tip aimed towards her left
breast, her heart.

She thrust down, and the knife, my knife, penetrated, stabbing her deeply.
It was obvious, even to me, that it was a fatal wound. She fell, limply,
the knife still jutting out of her breast, just as Terry got to her and
caught her before she struck to the ground.

Laocorn, who had been screaming loudly earlier, was screaming even louder
now, in a higher pitched tone that threatened to break the sound barrier.
He was in a lot of pain, that much was obvious.

Terry was holding Sulia in his arms now, her chest was all bloody. Tears
were in his eyes.

"Sulia!" He said, "Why? Oh God, no!"

Sulia, who was still breathing despite the massive self-inflicted wound,
gasped out: " I've weakened him, strike my brother in the chest, and this
will all be over."

"No, Sulia, I might kill you!"

"Please Terry, if you love me, even a little? Please?" pleaded Sulia.

"Suliaaaaaa.." Hissed Laocorn, as he strode towards the couple, his right
arm swirling with energy. His left arm was limp now, and the chest plating
seemed to have cracks in it.

Terry took no notice of Laocorn, at least, at first. He just said to Sulia
that: "I will finish it."
Then he laid her down on the ground, stood up, and turned around to face
Laocorn. But his head was down, as if he was grieving.

The tears that were in his eyes were streaming down his cheeks now, and he
had blood on his hands. Sulia's blood.

As Terry stood there, energy began to swirl around him, this surprised
Laocorn who just stood there in shock, for Terry Bogard was not known for
generating this much energy, this much power.

The energy was all around Terry now, surrounding him, suffusing him, until
it seemed as if he was overflowing with it. And all the time this was
happening, Terry was looking down, so that his eyes could not be seen.
Looking towards his hands, his bloody hands.

By this time, I had managed to find some cover, far enough away from the
fight that I couldn't get hurt, but close enough to see everything.

Without warning, Terry's head snapped up, looking directly at Laocorn, but
I got a good look at his eyes from my point of view, and the sight of those
eyes still keeps me awake at night.

They were red. Not from tears, but red from anger. They were glowing a
bright crimson, so that the pupils couldn't even be seen anymore, and the
tears that were streaming down his cheeks were red too, red as blood.

This alarmed Laocorn, who was finally able to snap out of his frozen state
of shock, let loose his most powerful looking energy blast yet, screaming:
"Die!!!"

Terry just stood there, even as the impressive looking energy blast came at
him, when, all of a sudden he leaps towards the energy blast, his arm
outstretched, his fist, no, not just his fist, but his whole body glowing
brightly with power.

The two energy forms collided, Laocorn's reddish-pink energy blast battling
with Terry's blue form of power. Blinding everyone for a few minutes with
the bright flash of light that occurred upon collision.

For a few moments, it wasn't sure who would overwhelm who, all I know is,
that during those moments, no one, not the police, not the NERV people, not
the bystanders, not even I were breathing. We were all holding our breath,
awaiting the outcome.

And the result was soon seen, Terry overwhelmed, totally overwhelmed the
Laocorn's energy and he continued to rush forward, fist outstretched, his
whole body still flaring with energy.

Now, I wasn't sure how he did it, but I think that it was because of Sulia.
Terry was so affected by grief and anger over what had happened to Sulia,
that it was like adrenaline, except that you probably have to multiply it a
couple of hundred times.

Anyway, the inevitable occurred, and Terry Bogard struck Laocorn in the
chest, exactly where he was supposed to, in the part that was full of
cracks and had been weakened by Sulia's sacrifice.

The armor then seemed to explode, shattering to bits from the hit that it
received from Terry. Laocorn, sans armor, was flung away by the force of
the blow and knocked unconscious.

The battle done, Terry's energy quickly dwindled away, seemingly
dissipating into the air, but even as that was happening he quickly turned
and ran towards Sulia, although he was only standing and running through
sheer force of will.

As Terry Bogard ran towards her, the NERV agents and the police were soon
swarming all over the place, as if by securing the area now, they could
make up for their uselessness earlier in the fight. Several went towards
Laocorn, to check if he was still alive and if so, to bring him to custody.
Others went to Gowcaizer, and attempted to rouse him. And still others went
towards me, uncertainty on their faces on how to deal with a simple college
student, who was where he wasn't supposed to be.

Some of them were cloistered around Sulia, most of them paramedics, but
they gave way when Terry ran towards them. I, also ran towards Terry and
his loved one, the authorities, still uncertain of what to do about me, let
me pass too.

Terry was huddled over Sulia, clutching her close to him, he spared a quick
glance at one of the paramedics. The trained medical expert simply shook
his head. It was enough to convey his meaning. With that, Terry really lost
it.

He held her even closer, unmindful of the blood that was staining his
clothes.

"Sulia!" whispered Terry, "please, please don't die, I made a promise to
you, Remember? Wake up Please? Please!"

Sulia, who had been unconscious for quite some time, stirred a bit, and
saw who was holding her and smiled wanly.

Terry saw this and smiled back, only to grimace when her eyes closed and
her head fell and hung limply to the side.

"SULIA!!!!"

That shout, no, that cry of anguish pierced the heart of every person
present that day.

All of the personnel around him, including me, stepped back, to give him
room for his grief.

Terry didn't notice this, he was sobbing, crying unabashedly. Still holding
her close, he touched her cheek, not quite believing what was in front of
him.

"Sulia, I never even had the chance, I never even got to say" Terry broke
down at this point, with heart rending sobs that racked his body, before he
whispered, in a tone that few people could hear: "I love you."

						-*-

I wasn't sure how I staggered out of the park that day.

All I know is that I managed to get to my friend Sakamoto's apartment and
dragged him out to a bar and got dead drunk.

Before I got drunk, I remember thinking about my own situation, my own
lovelife.

I loved Kyoko, that much I was sure of, but I didn't know if Kyoko loved me
back. I do know that, even for an apartment house manager, she was pretty
friendly to me. In fact, we were pretty close.

But, did she love me?

I know I loved her.

I have to tell her, I would never be able to rest, never be able to sleep
if I didn't. Even now, the thought, the memory of Terry Bogard, the Hungry
Wolf, the Hero of Southtown huddled over the body of the girl that he loved
still haunts me.

She never even got to hear him say those three precious words. Three little
words that could have meant so much to her.

I vowed that I wouldn't make that mistake. It was a lesson that I learned
the hard way. But it was a valuable lesson.

A pity that I made that vow just before getting stone-cold drunk.

If my neighbors, Yotsuya and Mrs. Ichinose are to be believed, I staggered
home that night with enough alcohol in me to knock out an Irishman and as a
consequence of being so drunk, announced to the whole world what I had been
dying to say for so long.

I said, or to be exact, I shouted the words to my loved one. The words that
Terry Bogard had not been able to say to his loved one.

"KYOKO! I LOVE YOU!!!!!"

*********************************************************************

The anime characters that I hijacked to put into this alternative universe
fanfic. I listed them down here and put in their actual characteristics
according to their respective animes, so that readers will know who's who:

Yusaku Godai- A college student, wishy washy, indecisive and pitiful, from
Rumiko Takahashi's romatic comedy "Maison Ikkoku." Is in love with Kyoko
Otonashi, the manager
of that apartment house.

Kyoko Otonashi- a beautiful young widow who is the manager of Maison
Ikkuko, is from the same anime (Maison Ikkoku) as Yusaku is from, and if
the manga are any indication, also has some feelings for the poor college
student.

Terry Bogard- blonde fighter from the Fatal Fury video games and anime
done by MasamiObari. Has lost two loved ones, according to the animes,
Lily, in the first anime, and Sulia, in the movie. Very powerful fighter.

Laocorn Gaudamus- twin brother of Sulia, who after avenging his father's
murder through the use of a piece of the armor of Mars, went mad and
searched out the other five pieces, so as to become a god. From the Fatal
Fury movie.

Sulia Gaudamus- Twin sister of Laocorn, she saw her brother descend into
madness, and after seeing herself being unable to stop him, enlisted the
help of Terry Bogard and his friends. She is also from the Fatal Fury
movie.

Gowcaizer- from the anime Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer. Originally Isato Kaiza
of a future city, he received a mysterious gem known as the Kaizer stone
from his rival, Kash. With the stone, Kaiza could enter into the realm of
the superhuman and become Gowcaizer. Very young and brash, and relatively
inexperienced as a fighter, despite being a tough brawler.

Mrs. Ichinose and Yotsuya- neighbors of Yusaku Godai from the anime Maison
Ikkoku. Theylove to make fun and take advantage of Yusaku, they refer to
him as their greatest source of entertainment.

NERV- the UN agency based in Japan from the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion.
They are charged with saving the world from destruction by the angels,
through the use of their own robots called EVAs, which can only be piloted
by specific fourteen year old children.

Guyver- a teenager who somehow manages to get an odd armor which surrounds
him and makes him super-powerful. The armor is known as the Bio-Booster
Guyver. An organization known as Cronos owned the said armor and they want
it back. From the anime Bio Booster Guyver.

Saiyanman- the identity that Son Gohan of Dragonball Z took up during his
college years in the city so as not to let others know that he was
super-powered. Very powerful, is capable of destroying an entire planet,
even stronger than pure-blood saiyans, due to his hybrid mix.

Macross City- from the anime Superdimesional Fortress Macross, a veritable
classic in anime, Macross city is the city that is inside this Space
Fortress, which was capable of defeating an entire alien fleet of warships.

And the most important and final character who did not come from any anime:

YOU- a visitor to Macross City and befriended by Yusaku Godai. An anime fan
who likes to read fanfiction and was kind enough to take the time to
download my work and read it. Thank you, without you, then there would be
no point in writing this, would there?

Final Notes: well, I hoped you like it. I know that I just got some anime
scenes from various animes and spliced them all together. I know I am not
being original, but, heck, its just a fanfiction, done not for profit but
for fun. By the way, Maison Ikkoku and Fatal Fury animes are two of my very
favorites, if you've heard of it but never seen it, get them! They're
worth it! And speaking of worth it, Astro city comic books by Kurt Busiek
are the best! There are several trade paperbacks around, like Astro city:
Life in the Big City, find it and read it, you won't be disappointed.
That's about it, please send all C & C to lynch@surfshop.net.ph. Thanks!
