Anyways, here are the questions :

1) Was there any particular naming scheme set to the Angels. That is,
did the Dead Sea Scrolls tell what their names were, or were they
assigned by NERV and/or SEELE accordingly?

2) Anybody know of anyplace where potential names for other Angels can
be found, keeping with the "spirit" of the original names? In
particular, I'm looking for a name that could be applied to a female
Angel. I vaguely recall seeing something like this a long time ago, but
damned if I can find it now.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Derek

First of all, Derek, the important thing to remember about Evangelion is
that the creators took heavy liberties with the whole shall we say,
'flavor' of the story. There isn't much that is 'true' (as the three
principal monotheistic religions of the Earth, that being Christianity,
Judaism, and Islam, see things.)

The Dead Sea Scrolls have nothing really to do with angels. They are
bits of Old Testament works, and if you count the Catholic Bible's Book
of Tobit, angels are named only THREE times in the entire Old Testament.
The naming and classification of the angels came about as scholarly
works by Hebrews borrowing and hybridizing liberally from ancient
Egyptian, Sumerian, Babylonian, and Persian supernatural beings during a
period of time from about 200 BCE to about 100 CE, which were then
translated into Greek. Later, the subject of angels was hotly debated by
Christian scholars and Saints alike. No one could agree on anything,
from what their names where, to what they did, to how many there really
were.

As an example, on the subject of the archangels, Christianity generally
accepts that there are seven (who some of them are of course, is up
grabs). Islam only recognizes four. Archangel candidates can find
themselves in several different angelic orders, depending on who's
writing the text, and the same archangel might appear as the warden of
more than one heavenly domain while simultaneously holding the position
of Angel of Death and even moonlighting as a fallen Duke of Hell!

All of this means that you are free to make up whatever you want on the
subject, because no one can prove what is 'true' one way or the other,
with any kind of convincing unassailable proof.

However, here is a potential angelic heirarchy in descending order of
precedence, with some angelic names thrown in: (Source: "Angels - An
Endangered Species," by Malcolm Godwin, Simon and Schuster Press,
Copyright 1990)

1. First Choir: Seraphim

Micheal

2. Second Choir: Cherubim

3. Third Choir: Thrones (Ophanim or Galgallin)

4. Fourth Choir: Dominions (Hashmallim)

Zadkiel, Hashmal, Yahriel, Muriel

5. Fifth Choir: Virtues (Malakim, or Dunamis, or Tarshishim)

Micha-el, Gabri-el, Rapha-el, Bari-el, Tarshish, and Satan-el

6. Sixth Choir: Powers

Cama-el, Kemuel

7. Seventh Choir: Principalities

Ana-el, Hai-el, Cervill

8. Eighth Choir: (I'm not making this up) The Magnificent Seven

(More than seven are listed of course, because there is no final
consensus on who belongs here. The Catholic Church gave up on angels
following the Black Plague's reign in Europe, as a result of the growing
popularity of scientific theories regarding the nature of the universe,
a universe which becomes too difficult to explain angels under the old
theories.)

Michael, Gabriel, Rapha-el, Uri-el, Metatron (A true badass according to
many rabbis), Remi-el, Sari-el, Ana-el, Ragu-el, Razi-el, Remi-el, (Any
of these names look familiar? I thought so. These are names of some
archangels, so what are they doing down here in the minor leagues? Now
does the confusion and contradiction about angelic lore become clear?)

9. Ninth Choir: Angels

Dubbiel, Rahab, Samael, Shemjaza, Arakiba, Kokabiel, Tamiel, Ramial,
Asael, Armaros, Batanel, Ananel, Zaquiel, Daniel, Ezequeel, Bariqijael,
Samsapiel, Turiel, Jomjael, Ithuriel, Zephon, thousands upon thousands
of others...

Some specific angels for specific purposes:

Abortion - Kasdaye
Alchemy - Och
Anger- Arael
Aquarius - Ausiel
Barrenness - Akriel
Birds - Arael
Calculations - Butator
Chance - Barakiel

I could on and on, but if you really need more, just email me.
