As always, my position is that there is too much spam and not enough C&C on
this list. The first problem could be solved by people reading the FAQ and
the second by everyone responding to one fic a week. While a nice thought
this isn't very realistic.
Recently I thought up a fanfic which seems to be of a new genre of fanfiction
(or if not new an under-explored genre). I'm could hope that an interest in
this genre will spark a 'New Age of Creative Writing' on this list. However I
would end up very disappointed. The fanfic which spawned the idea centers
around Kalia (an original character) and uses ideas from Kosuke Fugishima's Oh
My Goddess! series. I'm calling this type of fic a spin-off.
My fanfic (which I'm still trying to find time to write) is about a young
girl named Kalia who is granted a wish by the goddess Skuld. After conversing
with the young goddess Kalia learns of Yggdrasil, the computer which runs the
universe. She wishes for a pychic connection to Yggdrasil which Skuld is
forced to grant. The wish grants Kalia the ability to summon up a computer
interface much like Washuu's transparent dimension computer. By changing
Yggdrasil's programming she can alter the laws of the universe (reverse
gravity, make blinking audible, etc.)
Skuld, upon returning to heaven finds a large number of gods angry with her
for revealing the existance of Yggdrasil to a mortal. Unfortunately due to
the protections within the wish system not even Kami can can revoke the wish.
The only way the wish can be broken is for Kalia to ask for it to be removed.
So Skuld assigned the task of tormenting poor Kalia until she willingly gives
up the wish. This fic will be modern comedy as is Oh My Goddess but there is
no reason that a spin-off has to follow the genre of the original. How about
a police drama fanfic about an officer working in the Nerima area. Nabiki
could be an informant or the police could be investigating the massive amounts
of property damage.
This type of fanfiction is really a combination between the new character and
original genres. I'm not claiming that no one has ever combined these two
genres before (that would be foolish at best). I'm merely attempting to point
out that this is an infrequently used genre with lots of potential for new
fanfics. So here's the writers challenge. Get those creative gears moving
and explore this relatively untouched genre of fanfiction.
