THE TABLES HAVE TURNED 1
Serena walked softly into the garden, admiring the beautiful flowers. She sat down on a small, concrete bench. Her hair was done up in its usual odangos and she wore a short sundress with a sunflower print.
Darien walked by the garden on his way to the lake. He stopped at the entrance and his jaw fell open. "Serena! What are you doing here?"
"I'm waiting for someone else. Leave me alone Darien, the tables have turned and now I've found someone new," Serena was slightly startled by his being there but recovered quickly. She turned away from him and stared through a small opening in the wall of flowers at a field where some horses were running freely.
Darien hung his head and trudged off to the lake. <What happened? I just don't understand.> Darien thought.
Tears welled up in Serena's eyes but she wouldn't let them overcome her. As she sat there a man came up behind her and covered her eyes with his hands. "Guess who!"
She reached up, pulled his hands off her face and whirled around. "Darren, you scared me! You really shouldn't sneak up behind people like that!" she scolded.
"Sorry," he pretended to be a real gentleman. He took her hand and kissed it. Serena's face turned a bright red. "Would you like to go for a boat ride?"
"Absolutely," as she began to walk, she tripped and Darren caught her. Once again Serena blushed, he leaned over and kissed her on the forehead. <I'm not ready for this.>
The couple went and rented a boat and headed out on the lake. Serena laid back, enjoying the warm sun on her face. Darren reached over and squeezed her hand. As she sat up to look over at him, Serena saw Darien, in another boat, alone, heading towards them.
"Come on, Darren, let's go get some ice cream." As she had hoped, Darren rowed them back to shore.
They went and got ice cream but Serena wasn't very hungry. "Are you okay?" Darren asked her, noticing she hadn't eaten much.
"Yea, I'm fine, I just had a big breakfast," Serena made up a phony excuse. "I'm pretty tired, I think I'll go home and take a nap,"
"I'll walk you home," Darren offered. Serena didn't object but they walked home in silence.
<Why am I going out with Darren?> Serena asked herself. <Is it just to make Darien jealous, or do I really like Darren? I know I don't feel the same way about him as I do, I mean *did* about Darien.>
Darren looked over at her and wondered <What's going through your head? I can sense your hesitancy every time I try to get close to you. Did someone hurt you? I promise I will never do anything to hurt you.> He made a silent vow to her
They arrived at Serena's house. "See you later."
Darren leaned over and gave her a kiss on the cheek. "Goodbye."
Serena disappeared into her house and Darren walked away. <You're going to fast. I'm not ready for this yet.> She shuddered at the thought of kissing anyone but Darien. <No, I've got to get over him.>
She heard a knock on the door. When Serena opened the door, she saw all of her friends standing there, holding a cake.
"Hi guys! What are you doing here?" Serena asked the group.
"We wanted some cake and you are our excuse," they replied.
"Well, come on in and let's have some cake," Serena put on a facade, hiding her inner turmoil.
They all piled into her kitchen and began eating. "This is really good, Thanks guys!" Serena said as she was stuffing her face.
"I saw Darien today..." Rei started until she looked over and saw Serena's pale face. "Lita made this cake and the rest of us helped her," Rei quickly changed the subject.
They finished the cake in silence. "Well, I've got to go do my homework," Ami broke the awkward silence.
"Me too," the others agreed.
"See you later," Serena called as her friends walked down the street.
As Serena sat in her house, alone and silent, she decided she needed to get out. While she was getting some money out of her dresser, Serena looked up and saw a picture of Darien sitting there seeming to stare at her As she put the picture face down, Serena gasped, <Darien and Darren are almost identical!>
Serena went over to the phone and dialed Darren's number. "Hey Darren, do you want to get some tea?"
"I'd love to Serena," Darren replied.
"Okay. I'll meet you at Juuban Cafe in fifteen minutes," Serena hung up without saying goodbye.
"I wonder what this is all about," Darren thought aloud.
Serena found another picture of Darien and shoved it into her pocket. She flew down to the kitchen, left a note for her parents, and headed for the cafe.
When she got there she immediately spotted Darren sitting in a corner of the crowded cafe. "Hi Serena, what's up?" Darren asked as she sat down.
"Well, I was wondering about your parents. I've never heard you say anything about them," Serena replied.
The blood drained out of Darren's face leaving him looking sickly pale. "Umm... They died in a car crash when I was a young child," Darren answered quietly.
Serena pulled the picture ou of her pocket. It was a portrait of darien as a young child that he had found and given to her. "Does this picture look familiar?"
He took the picture and stared at it for a while before answering. "Well it looks like me as a child, except the boy in this picture has black hair and I've always had blond hair."
"Did you have any sisters or brothers?" Serena inquired.
"I don't know, when I found out about my parents death I became self-destructive and got amnesia. So, if I did have any siblings I can't remember them," Darren answered. "Why are you so curious all of the sudden?"
"Wll, I have this other friend whoseparents died in a car crash when he was a child. He also had amnesia and was put in an orphanage. I was just wondering if you two were somehow related. This picture is of him," Serena explained.
"How weird. I've always thought it would be neat to have a brother. I'd like to meet him," Darren told her.
"I'll see what I can do. Call you later," she called over her shoulder.
"I might have a brother," Darren sat there, stunned.
