Hi, timing can be really funny at times, I've recently done
some cleaning and reogranising of my room, which lead to perusing a few
old copies of Dragon Magazine. One interesting article was looking at
the concept of wishes. This was done in AD&D terms, but after seeing
some of the wish related story's that have been posted latley, I
thought that the varried types of wishes might provoke some ideas or at
least a chuckle from some of you. In summery here they are.
Types of wishes
Wish of Omnipotence: or wish of Ultrapotence, this is the wish that
can produce solid gold castles from thin air, reshape the continents,
or change great armies into lemings. Basically it can conceivably do
anything, though circumstances somehow always prevent it from being
used at full capacity.
Wish of Contrivance: To draw an example from Mage, this is the static
wish. For instance, if Ranma wished to be cured of his curse, the
other wishes would more or less act to correct the problem, this wish
would cause Ranma to sudenly get a barrel of Nanichuan water from
somewhere.
Wish of Expiration: This is a wish that only lasts a certain period of
time. You could consider Cinderella an example of this sort of wish,
being granted everything to go to the ball but with them fading at
midnight.
Wish of Limitations: This is like a wish of Expiration, except instead
of only lasting a certain period of time, it will only work within a
certain location.
Wish of Malevolence: This is the Monkey's paw wish. Basically it
fulfills the letter of the request, but pumps as much evil and
suffering into the details as possible.
Wish of Benevolence: This is the opposite of the Wish of Malevolence,
whatever evil or selfish elements the wish had are eliminated or
changed. IE, if Happi wished he were kneck high in panties, he might
sudenly find himself helping launder the clothing at a childrens
boarding school.
Wish of Contrariness: This wish grants the opposite of what was wished
for.
Half-Wish: This does half of what is wished for. If Nabiki wished for
fifty pounds of gold, she might get 25 pounds, or a fifty pound weight,
or she might suddenly gain fifty pounds.
Wish of Overkill: This is a wish that does what asked of it, then it
does more. If Ryouga wished he could tell Akane his feelings, he might
find himself confiding his feelings with everyone. Or if Shampoo
wished Ranma loved her, it could affect Ranma, Ryouga, Kuno, and any
number of others
Wish of Vagueness: This wish gives roughly what was asked for, but the
details are a little off. A wish for a magic sword could produce a
magic axe, Ryouga wishing that Akane loved him could cause Nabiki to
suddenly fall for him.
Wish of Misinterpretation: This wish never gives anything similar to
what was asked. If Gosenkugi wished for incredible strength, he might
develope incredibly strong bad breath, if Shampoo wished Ranma loved
her, she'd sudenly be pursued by a lovesick wild horse, if Nabiki
wished for untold riches, she might get untold roaches instead.
Wish of Unspoken Desire: This is a wish that warps the meaning so that
it would grant whatever hiden desire lurked in the Wisher's heart at
the time the wish was made.
Wish of Least Resistance: This is a wish that always grants the
request in whatever way would change reality the least. If Kuno wished
for a magic sword, the nearest magic sword matching thoses
specifications would be teleported to him, never mind that it's owner
would be furious about what happened. And of course if Ryouga wished
Akane loved him, he'd switch bodies with Ranma.
Wish of Credit: This is basically a wish that has a limited cash
value, ie if you wished for money, it would only be able to grant that
limited amount, if you wished up an earthquake, the total damage would
be exactly that amount etc.
