A good Fic! Nice characterization of a group of people fighting a losing war
and knowing it, with pathos and tragedy in just the right dose. After all,
there aren't many worse ways to go down than fighting an absolute monarch.
Would be nice if there was a complimentary fic showing the Senshi's point of
view, with all their holier than zou attitude and their absolute disregard of
free will. Some sort of sect or cult mentality.

Looking forward to your next fic. Too bad there isn't a happy ending, with
the Senshi going down... a couple of Tridents could do that.

They would be stopped by the forcefield protecting Crystal Tokyo. It is, after
all, generated by a force powerful enough to wipe all life from a planet.
Realistically, there is no way that, in the situation described, somebody wouldn't
have nuked Tokyo.

Spamfic Time...

Moment of Choice

Saturn and Uranus were the last to arrive. The taller of the two nodded to
Serenity, and said, curtly, "It's over."

The Queen sighed. "Did you give them time to evacuate before doing it?".
There was an almost translucent quality to her. Ethereally beautiful and
pure, but fragile, stressed almost to the breaking point. She trembled a
little as she reached out and Endymion took her hand.

Uranus shook her head. "They didn't give us time. They were already
launching everything they had left when we teleported in. We did what we
had to."

"Always the motto of the Outer Senshi," Mars muttered.

Neptune glared at her. "Someone had to. Or would you rather we all died?"

"Please..." Everyone looked at Serenity with concern, forgetting their
dispute.

Mercury said gently, "Given that the crisis is over, perhaps you should
get some sleep. You nearly pushed yourself too far."

Serenity smiled ruefully, a hint of her old self flickering into view.
"Believe me, I'm going straight to bed once we finish this meeting and
I'm definitely going to sleep in, tomorrow. I'm fine for right now."

Endymion took over, "Let's try to keep this short, then. What's our
situation, now?"

Uranus reported, "Those were the last of the ICBMs in America, and all
the shorter range stuff in Asia has already been used."

Mars added, "The Horsemen seem to have vanished with the destruction of
their master. There are still some Hounds out there, but without Lillis
to lead and replace them, the surviving military and police forces can
keep them away from the remaining inhabited areas. We can deal with the
last of them once things calm down."

"How...how many survivors are there?" Serenity asked, her horror at the
death toll battling with her dread of the responsibility for the survivors.

Mercury projected a globe with blue dots representing population
distribution. "I estimate about 1.5 billion. Of course
with radiation poisoning, plagues, toxic chemical contamination,
and climate changes, added to the negative psychic energy still flooding
the world, within ten years it's not likely that more than
ten percent of the present population will still be alive and human.

Jupiter gasped. "It's that bad? I thought the worst was over."

Pluto finally spoke up. "It is worse than that. Those best equipped
to fight off attack will be the ones most at risk of contamination and
transformation. The weak in spirit will succumb to fear and hatred,
become monsters and so gain resistance to radiation, poison and disease.
The strong will die of these things, and from attacks by their transformed
former comrades. Eventually the safe zone maintained by Serenity will be
the last place where true humans will exist as anything except prey."

There was a stunned silence all around.

"Is that it, then?" Serenity asked with a choked sob. "Is this the
wonderful future we've been working for? So I can be 'Queen' of a blasted
wasteland full of monsters? I'm pregnant, Pluto. Did you know that?
Did you!? Is this the world I have to give to my daughter? I didn't
even want to be a queen, but you all said the world needed unity so
it could be saved! Is this what you call saving the world? Is it?!"
She turned her face into Endymion's side as he held her tight.

"No," answered Venus. "It isn't saving the world. So...let's really
save it. All that stuff is only going to happen if we can't stop it,
but I say we can! Luke Skywalker didn't believe in the no-win scenario,
so why should we?"

"I...have an idea that might help," Mercury offered. "Remember Ice Princess
Kaguya? She intended to permanently freeze everything on Earth, but the
victims all recovered without lasting injury once we defeated her. I've
been studying what she did...for application to medical cryogenics. I
think I know enough to duplicate her methods. With Neptune's help I could
initiate a process that would put most of the planet into suspended animation.
We are already on the way to a small ice age as a result of the nuclear war,
so we'll be working with the natural trend."

"And then what?" Jupiter asked. "Do we all stay on ice forever?"

"No, without someone to maintain it, the effect will eventually break down,
the planet will warm again, and we'll defrost. By that time, the fall out
will have...er...fallen out and the poisons should have broken down into
less dangerous substances."

Mars shivered at the idea, and shook her head. "I don't think that's enough.
It doesn't deal with the negative psychic energies. Many of them would transform
into monsters, emerge from the ice, and then start feeding on the ones still left
as human."

"Well," Neptune commented, "You are the expert. How should we get rid of them?"

"About the only way I can think of is to give everyone at risk of transformation
an exorcism, but that would require far more people with training and talent than
we have."

"No!" Serenity declared, her face still wet, but her eyes clear again. She
held up her sceptre and the Ginzuishou glittered at the top.
"There is a way."

There ya go. A scene with the senshi demonstrating how self-righteous they are,
and their total disregard for free will. Or something.
