Does anyone know how much factual basis evangelion has? was the
destruction of the earth by angels sent by god ever prophesized by the
ancients [irrespective of fulfillment of the prophecy]? are there or have
there ever been "dead sea scrolls" and what's really in them?

Don't know about prophecies and such, but the Dead Sea Scrolls are
factual. Found in a cave, if I'm remembering correctly. Don't really
recall if anyone ever said what was written on them, but I highly
doubt it was about 17 angels coming down to test humanity ^_^

Hopefully this isn't tempban-bait, but here's some of what
I've read about this....

The DSS were found by a shepherd in 1947 in caves on a cliff
face near where Masada once stood. The scrolls are made of
papyrus and leather, but due to weathering have not held up
well over the centuries. Large parts are missing or damaged,
but what has been found is *very* similar to the modern
Hebrew bible (the Old Testament only, I believe).

That's the facts on the history, now for recent news: there's
arguments amongst scholars about translations, meanings, and
order of certain scrolls. A large debate has raged amongst
academics because a small group of historians and translators
have hoarded the scrolls, trying to say theirs is the official
translation, and allowing no one else to examine them.
(Sounds kinda like Gendo and SEELE arguing over scenarios,
doesn't it? O_-)

As for the 17 angels, their names are those of the nephilim.
There are said to be 24 angels who surround God in heaven:
the seven archangels (Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, and
three others, known by many different names), and the 17
nephilim. Depending on the brand of old Catholicism and
Christianity, there are many names for the nephilim, but
those used in NGE are the most commonly used in Chrisianity.

Interesting side thought: if all angels have AT fields, then
what are the four EVAs and three Reis? Especially when the
colours of Shinji's EVA match those of Michael, the greatest
of the archangels, as do the other EVAs.
