"Kanzaki!"

Hitomi looked behind her, a man was running up the steps waving at her.
"Amano . . .sempai?"

"Kanzaki! Wait a second. I've got great news." Amano finally caught
up with Hitomi near the top of the stairs and tried to catch his breathe
before continuing. "Hitomi. I've finally found you." He gathered his
strength and tried to calm himself. "Kanzaki..."

"Um, was there something you wanted?"

Amano smiled. "She finally agreed! Yukari finally said she'll marry
me."

"Marry?" Hitomi's face was construed in confusion. "But...but..."

"Gomen, Hitomi." The voice came from above them.

"Why you!" Hitomi pulled out an accusing finger at her best friend.
"You...." Then she smiled, and then hugged her best friend
enthusiastically. "Yukari! Congratulations! I'm so happy for you!"

"Eh. Really? You're not mad at me for breaking our promise?" Yukari
looked deeply into her best friend's loving eyes, proving that she truly
was happy for her. "Hitomi..."

"Oh, that...don't worry about that." Hitomi brushed off the wind with
her hand, "That's not important compared to you and Amano sempai here
getting married." Both girls hugged each other intently. "I wish you
the best Yukari."

"Thank you, Hitomi. You really are a good friend." She paused. "No. A
Best Friend." Both women laughed.

Amano just scratched his head. "Um, What promise?"

Suddenly both girls came to their senses. Hitomi and Yukari just looked
at Amano uneasily.

Hitomi was walking down the street where she lived. She was all alone,
again, just like the night before, and the nights before that. She
kinda missed Yukari and her walking home together, but three was a crowd
and she knew that all too well.

Sigh.

What was she being so depressed about? She thought it was the promise
of marrying first she made with her best friend. But that couldn't be
it. Could it?

"Hitomi?" A woman had crossed the street and met her on the same side
of the road.

"Huh? Oh, Mother." Hitomi cheerfully smiled back. "Let me help you."
She grabbed one of the grocery bags her mother was juggling in her arms.
They continued their way back home.

"How was work today, dear?" Her mother asked as both of them entered
the house.

"Well, It's kinda boring...If you can say writing all day in front of a
computer is exciting then...well you know what I mean." Hitomi dropped
down the bags in the kitchen and went straight up to her room.

"Being an apprentice journalist is hard work, Hitomi..."

"I know...I know." Hitomi closed the door to her room and quietly
slipped into her bed. "I know that it does not compare to anything I've
experience before...but..."

Suddenly a cold breeze swept through the open windows in her room.
Hitomi had to rush and close them before any more of her things
that used to be on her desk got knocked out of place. "Oh, geez. Who
let this window open?"

A single tarot card was left on her table. She sighed, knowing the
trouble she'll have to go through picking every single card off her
room's floor. She instinctively did open the single tarot card face up
and was suprised to see that it was the card with the serpent picture on
it. "Van?"

She closed her eyes to see a vision...a vision that had just presented
itself to her.

Hitomi found herself walking around a palatial garden. A fountain was
the center piece, several tall rows of cleanly cut shrubs extended
outwards in some sort of colossal maze of a garden.

"Where am I? Could this be Atlantis?" She looked high up into the sky,
the night was filled with an endless sea of stars. "Where..." She tried
to find it, The Mystic Moon but..." No, there's only the moon I can see.
Then this must be..."

In the distance, she saw a familiar figure.

"Van-sama! Van-sama!" A girl was calling out in the darkness. "Where
are you, Van-sama?!"

"Merlelu?" Hitomi ran towards her friend but both of them caught sight
of a wreckage that truly sent shivers down both women's spine.
"Escaflowne?"

Merlelu ran towards the fallen Ispano guymelef crying, calling Van's
name.

Hitomi ran as well but she suddenly stop short of her stride when she
saw a girl coming out from the wreckage. She was about her age, younger
she guessed, had brown her like her and..."Van!" She was carrying Van
on her shoulders, trying desperately to lift the lifeless and
bloodstained body of the King of Fanelia...

"Van!" Hitomi fainted.

"Ugh...Hey wake up, you!" The girl was struggling to get Van out of the
flaming wreck that surrounded Escaflowne. "Help. Adolf! Mary-Ann,
anyone! Help!" No sooner than the girl had cried out that several
servants came running out from a nearby house.

"Oh, my. Where in heaven's name did you pick that boy from?" A man
in butler's clothing said as he took the unconscious stranger of the
girl's arms.

"How should I know? He came falling from the sky!" The girl
exhaustedly said as she fell in the arms of her chambermaid. "He...he
fell from the sky..." She fainted from the ordeal.

"Oh, my. Hirumi...Miss Hirumi...are you alright?" The servants
exclaimed.

"Quick we better get them inside." Adolf, the butler ordered, "and
someone get the family doctor."

>From a nearby bush, Merlelu was crying while watching complete strangers
take Van into a strange house in a strange world.

"Van sama..."
