Hello everyone.
I wrote this some time ago, to start off a fic - that
has not and likely never will eventuate. Oh well,
them's the breaks, but I kinda liked what I'd written
and I wanted other people to see it. That and the fact
that I'm so sick of an untrammelled diet of Ranma that
I almost missed Kenjiko's latest excellent installment
of Girl Days.
For anyone who wants to know, Devil & Devil is a manga
currently running in Shounen Sunday; it has not been
animated at all to my knowledge. This character sketch
is about Mizuno, a supporting character.
Please C&C!

It was a nice peaceful morning. No demon attacks, no screaming
angel avengers, not even an annoyed Nanami (courtesy of Sword
Genuine Male Annoyance Service). Mizuno sighed as she enjoyed the
walk to school.
A trained exorcist must be calm in the face of shocking
events. She must not turn away from horrific sights. Nor may she
clip infuriating uncooperative exorcism subjects round the head,
or hogtie them in the middle of magic circles in order to perform
rituals upon them, however much she wants to.
Especially not when the possessing spirit is an angel.
Angels are beneficient spirits who are meant to guide and
protect Humanity. They are beautiful and wise and -
Amano Kanna ran past. "Because *you* did it!" he yelled
behind him. "Oh, good morning, Mizuno."
"Good morning, Ios."
"You were there! You could have *helped*!" came from behind.
Mizuno blinked as she recognised Amano Souma's voice behind her.
"Yo, Mizuno."
"Good morning, Sword."
- and petty and arrogant.
Mizuno sighed again. It is always painful to have one's
illusions shattered.
The truth is simply that angels are as fallible as humanity.
Close acquaintance with one made the truth more evident, rather
than disproving it.
On the other hand ...
"Sword, have you seen Nanami this morning?"
"No, we must've missed her-"
"SOUMA!!"
"Nanami! Hi, we-"
"Don't 'Nanami' *me*! You left me behind!"
"No, I didn't see you, so I thought you'd gone ahead!"
"I *always* leave at 7:50, with you!"
"But I *did* leave at 7:50, ten minutes ago!"
"Look at my watch, it's 7:55! You left early!"
"But Io-*Kanna* said - KANNA!!"
... demons aren't the utter dregs either, all the time.
/One day, soon,/ Mizuno promised herself, /I'll exorcise
them both. I'll send Sword back to Hell, and Ios to Heaven, and
whatever happens to angels and demons when they die will happen
to them. Then we'll get Souma and Kanna back.../
Getting Kanna back...
Mizuno smiled as she thought of it. The local delinquent who
had brazenly broken every law, who intimidated even hardened
Yakuza, who all the adults swore had been born simply to bring
back the death penalty, and who all the girls in school secretly
swooned over when they thought nobody was looking...
... Including the local exorcist.
/I don't know how I'm going to do it yet, but I will. I'll
find a way to remove Ios without hurting Kanna, and then I'll
bring him back. I know I will./
Mizuno smiled as the group reached the school gates and
headed in, ready to begin a new day.
/Soon./
