I've always detested the anti-mutant plot device Marvel contrived in order
to do a with-it type series back in the sixties that would let them comment
on racism, without actually having to do black characters.
Think about it, an x-man shows up and demonstrates a power, next thing
you have people whispering and drawing back, maybe rocks start
to get thrown, and so on.
Captain America, Thor, or any of
the other generic superheros, on the other hand would be mobed by autograph
seekers.
Now so you think your average joe on the street would make any distinction
between someone who gained super powers from a pill, Radiation, goddly
intervention,
or whatever, and someone who was born that way?
Not likely, so how do they make the distinction, Mutant ability^_^
This Rant has a point.
Do you think Ranma would be perceived as a non-mutant by people who saw
his transformation, or chi tossing ability, knowing instintively that
he must have been cursed, or trained in martial arts all his life?
They'd think he was a mutant as well.
Same goes for Shampoo, Genma, Mousse, Ryouga, and all the other
weird and wonderful characters that show up in Ranma.
So if this character were being persecuted by the 'norms'
for a Marvel type prejudice, Instead of getting on every
talk show in the land and making mega bucks from his talent,
which is what would happen in real life, Ranma and the others should be
in the same boat.
Ha,
seems there would be a parody in there somewhere.^_^

Well, here we go again. I'm busy pounding out part four of The Omega
Project, and so don't have time for even a teaser on this, so I figured I'd
send the idea to the FFML and see what turns up. Note this is NOT an SI.
A new student comes to Furinkan by the name of Soichiro Yamata, (no,
not the Soichiro from Maison Ikkoku). He's a rather shy sort, almost afraid
to talk to anyone, and for good reason.
His second day at Furinkan, he bumps into Akane in the hall,
knocking her books out of her hands. He acts like he's terrified,
apologizing profusely as he picks up her books. Akane is wondering just why
he's so jittery when none other than Tatewaki Kuno shows up.
He saw Soichiro bump into Akane and, due to the fact that he's not
running on all eight cylinders, figures that it was intentional. As such, he
begins to rant and rave in his usual fashion, the tirade ending with Kuno
charging the cringing Soichiro.
Before Kuno can even land a hit, something knocks him down the hall
like a rocket. He ends up embedded in one of the walls, and Soichiro runs
away.
It's found out that Soichiro is, in fact, a mutant, born with the
gift of telekinesis. Note that anti-mutant hysteria is beginning to rear its
ugly head in Japan, with some protests breaking out in the street by
pro-human groups. Soichiro's demonstration proves him a mutant and makes his
life a living hell as the student body shuns and begins to abuse him.
Akane, on the other hand, actually talks to Soichiro outside of
school, slowly overcoming her fear of mutants and learning that they are,
indeed, humans too. Of course, Ranma doesn't like this at first....
Now, with all this talk of mutants, one would expect one of the
X-groups to show up. This will not be a real crossover with any of them,
however Gambit is scheduled to make an appearance. He sees Soichiro's
powers, and decides to recruit him into the X-Men. This leads him to meet
Kasumi, who happens to develop a crush of sorts on him. Hey, Gambit's older
than she is, and who says she wouldn't be impressed by a handsome Gaijin,
huh? Just so long as she doesn't find out about his own mutancy... This
would lead Dr. Tofu on a little jealousy fit...
Anyway, since I just got this idea a few minutes ago, it's not
exactly complete. Any suggestions would be welcome, public or private.
