The tense on this particular sentence comes out strangely, in part because
some parts of this paragraph come off as unmarked thoughts.


Had it been her hairstyle or her tomboyish attitude being slandered, Lita
would've waved the insult off (or so she told herself--in reality, the girl
would've been sporting a nice black eye quicker than you can say 'Tyson'), but
the thing that Lita prided herself on more than anything else, even her
